OT: what to do?

Brother went to farm to find that someone had broken into two out of our three barns. used crow bars and what-not to pry the locks off of the frames and stuff. surprisingly, nothing was taken. called cops and reported it.
its on the sideroad 2 farms down from where i live. go there 'bout once a week. happened sometime between thurs nite and today at 2pm. gonna put up some motion lights and some wireless door sirens...
but the feeling i have is complete... i dunno. it sucks! its mainly storage but got a lot of valuables in there. anyone have any ideas about what to do?

yeah. that's what the officer thought too... and yeah, both my brother and i each thought of a trail cam... just to help catch them if they come back

It's good to hear nothing was removed.
I believe the lights and alarms will help depending on how remote the place is. If it is remote enough for day lite raids, lights are not much help. If you feel that intruders are more likly to come at night you can go a step farture when installing lights. Mount a spotlight bulb aimed directly at the closest home. Inform the neighbor and ask if he will call you if and when the light is on. I am not advocating you go confront tresspassers. You could safly asertain wherther an animal, wind, rain or something else caused it to trigger before calling the sheriff.

there is a house 50ft away! renting it out... since i live so close to town, the sideroad is pretty decent... not exactly remote, but in the dark, u can come from the bush and go undetected is everyones sleeping

I have an alarm on my office, house and shop. Both the office and house have been broken into within the last year. Nothing was taken because the alarm chased them off.

Do you trust those renters?

It not only humans that set motion lights into operation, if you ask the neighbour to call everytime the light is on, you will have a few sleepless nights,so will He. like chasing your tail
.Wouldn"t it be better to mount a siren somewhere that is activated when the door is opened.Wake up the whole area,They would be buzzing like bees.
If you do that, you may consider a prior informative leaflet drop to the area Farmers.

So if you were interviewed by the local news after she did some very wicked crime, would you say, " She was such a nice lady, the last person I would ever imagine doing something like that"?

I had some disassembled harrows and a complete set of D10 cultivators plus all tractor batteries stolen recently.

I have motion lights up now, fake cameras mounted in plain sight and a few hidden cameras. With so many out of work and scrap steel at good price I see this trend continuing.

Power company has been out in force past 2 wks replacing copper ground wires on all power poles as it has been stripped and sold.

Not fun to say the least - hope the theives don't challenge me because it could end up with 3's. S, S, and shutup.

The same thing happened at work over a long, three-day weekend, but they did manage to get away with some valuable equipment. This building has large overhead doors at each end and one heavy pedestrian door. The trouble is....if they get in (they cut a hole in the wall), they can open the overheads from inside and drive the stolen eguipment out. In addition to the usual motion lights, we did three things to see that it didn't happen again.

1. Chained the overhead doors from inside with hardened chains and padlocks.

2. Designed and installed a 6 volt alarm circuit on the doors that uses the momentary contact principle (using hidden limit sw. on the doors). It has a battery backup in case they get cute and shut off the power). We can disable it using a well-hidden switch when we enter. If the door is opened, even a little, the siren, which is located outside under the eaves in a cage....literally SCREAMS ...can be heard for 3/4 mile, easily. Everything for this alarm circuit was less than $150. Remember, the battery backup needs to have a charging feature to the circuit.

3. I can't tell you what the third thing is. It's a secret....but legal.

I know the frustration associated with this type of breakin and I wish you luck in solving it.

lol. i get your point. but to be honest, yes. i'd say that. wouldnt be my argument but i dont have a reason to think otherwise. there is nothing to convince me of suspecting her. (that i know of) yeah, she could snoop around and i wouldnt know... but still... something tells me (and the cop who came out) that its more thieves taking inventory...

When I was a child, my mother spanked my brother, Tom and I for a transgression that my youngest brother Dana did. She swore that little Dana would never be able to do such a thing, and Tommy and I were lacking personal responsibility by even accusing him. I've learned as an adult that the fairest way to deal with those who appear to be above suspiction is to consider them early. If they are innocent, the evidence will clear them early and we can move on to the others. Before retiring from the Coast Guard,I would ask, "Why are we dismissing the idea that this guy, or girl, could be the guilty?" If you always take the open approach to not considering anyone automatically above suspicion, people will not be offended that you considered whether they to could be at fault. We had a second class, that the chief thought could do no wrong, mind you that the chief and I are best friends still, yet when we look at the evidence, his boy most likely was publically intoxicated. It doesn't hurt anyone that we consider whether or not they did something. If the evidence shows them innocent, great.

Hmm... great point. i will definitely take that into consideration. but for now we do what we can. fixed the doors. gonna put some motion lights and other stuff up. if the cameras do their job, we'll see if anyone and who comes around

You mentioned that this 50 something year old woman works for the city council? How long can someone work for government and not be corrupted? She's starting to look more guilty each moment. What job does she do for the city council, anyhow, register dead voters, write regulations to increase property taxes? How much do you trust your local government? For crying out loud, she'd look less guilty if she were a secratery for the Mafia.

she is the Clerk/Deputy Chief Administrative Officer. ive never had a reason/issue to NOT trust the local government.
