O/T Roadkilled....

This afternoon on the way home from church, we were following an older couple from our church in the right hand lane of a 4 lane divided highway. I guess we were about a quarter mile behind them or so. Then I see a creature run across the road in front of them. At first I thought it might be a dog, then perhaps a fox. Then I realized it was a coyote. I guess it changed its mind and tried to run back in front of the our neighbors vehicle, but stopped. When they passed, it made a dash for the side of the road. It almost made it, too. I whacked it with the front right tire of the Suburban we were driving. I know some on here don't really like coyotes, and truth be known, I don't really think much of them either. Still, I can't help feeling just a little bad about the whole thing.

Don't feel bad about it, some animals actually learn when and how to aviod dangerous areas, mostly why I haven't seen any deer lately.

You did the right thing by not trying to avoid the critter. It's just not worth it going into the ditch or swerving into the oncoming lane.

When you say that you feel bad about the whole thing, I hope what you are refering to is any scratches you got on your Suburban. Like nnalert terrorist, the world is brighter with each dead coyote. They do not provide us with anything worthwhile, such as eggs, milk or meat. Coyotes are nothing but trouble, and if you must regret something, regret that you only drove over one.

I allus try to hit coyotes possums and groundhogs. I won't go more than a foot over the white line, onto the shoulder, though. None of em is worth losing control over your vehicle!

Years ago, I as on icyroad and an indecisive cat walked back * forth in front of me. If it had stuck to any of it's first 2 choices I coulda avoided it. It made 2 more choices neither good, nothing I could do couldn't stop in time from when I saw it. Felt bad when I saw it hunker down just as it disappeared from vision. Still can see it's face & hear the thunk. If it had just kept moving, instead of circling back....

Picked off a couple baby racoons one time, ma made it but the kits came from nowhere. Didn't like to mess up the family, but too many racoons around anyhow.

Wife ran over 2 adult racoons at the same time with the car - think she had all 4 wheels off the ground for an instant, that was kinda exciting rumble strps, theyt were big ones.

We hit something with the same car, was like a large dog or cyote or something, ripped the front fender off. No sign of what it was.

One time I was in England, getting off an intercity 125 train from London. The engineer was getting out too, and I wanted to talk to him. He said 'nice fast train ride for you yanks wasn't it?' I said 'yes, smooth too, except for one rubble a few miles back'. He said 'oh sorry for that sir. My fault. We happened to run over and kill an unfortunate Pakistani fellow". I said 'oh wow, with all the tracks in England fenced in or stone walls all around, I'm surprised he got on the rails'. He said 'oh, no sir, he wasn't on the rails at all sir, 'e was actually over standing at a bus stop, and the train accidently went over the wall, up an embankment, across a busy roundabout, alongside the double decker, and then back onto the rails again..... BUT WE GOT 'EM !!!'

I've found that trying to avoid squirrels usually leads to their demise..
Now I usually aim for them and they move out of the way!!!!!

25 years ago I was driving one of those little bitty Honda Civics. I had put a new motor in it and it was a great little runner.
It would have been a killer if I ever hit anything with it but fortunately I never did, except...
One evening about dusk I'm tooling along and meet a coyote in the middle of the highway.
No way to stop so I layed on my horn.
That moved him a little but not quite enough and I clipped his tail with my bumper pretty darned hard as I passed.
I have wondered many times how a dog or coyote would deal with a smacked up, broken tail.
Couldn't have been much fun.

Oh, man! One morning about 4 AM I was tooling up a four lane in Louisville in my Crown Vic squad car making a run. I guess I was going about 70 MPH with just my blue and reds on. Across the street a lady had been walking her CAT of all things. I was about 200 feet away and I saw the cat run diagonally across the street at full tilt. I heard the lady scream just as I crushed her cat. Man I felt bad.

Christopher, Do Not Shed a Tear or Feel Badlly at ALL! Coyotes have ravaged My Goat heard for far too long Not enough people shooting, trapping hitting them in the road, I don't particulary care how they die just as long as they do die!!!
Later,
John A.

Preach it John! We are putting off getting goats, ourselves till I get a .22, as coyotes aren't worthy of a $3.25 12gage round. We also plan to get a donkey that enjoys kicking dogs. If coyotes became extinct tomorrow, I would not shed a tear.

well,,, thats better than my SiL Luck.. he had a nice honda Sporty car with a interrupt engine ,, One morning on way to work ,55 mph,, Deer jumped from a hi bank onto the hood , hisAzbroke thru the driver window , but wiped SI'Ls face ,The Poor Guy had deer hair in his MOUTH !..,Further insult was ,,. the antler rack stabbed thru the hood and the valve cover and stuck a valve and broke the piston ,, the car was instantly junk..

I hope I don't get this thread road killed for you but,
about 30 years ago I was driving a 25 ton truck mounted crane from Alabama to Utah. I was driving on the out skirts of Memphis when a cat ran across the road in front of me. The truck at 85000# doesn't exactly stop on a dime so cat gets squashed. There was a police officer saw me and pulled me over. He made me go door to door to see who owned the cat. He said I had to make it right with the owner before he would let me go on. He followed me as I went door to door. I went to this nice little old ladies house and asked her if she had a cat. She said she did have a grey cat. I told her that the officer wanted me to make it right before I could go. She said she wasn't sure if it was her cat or not. I told her I didn't care that I just needed her to tell the officer that it was ok so I could go. I gave her $10 for the cat. As I was walking away the officer arrested the lady for selling pu??y on the street.

Just kidding Steven

Several years I was working at a local dealership and they towed a brand new F-150 into the body shop, had less than a thousand miles on it. A deer had wiped out the entire front end. I felt sorry for the poor guy.

Was going by this farm house with my red fuel tank truck. Some kids were playing in the yard and their dog took in after me. The dog didn't get to me in time, but the car behind me hit the dog. The kids probably only remember the red truck that went by.

Coyotes and other predators came about the same day as goats and cattle, seems like a good enough reason to me to not exterminate them. I have raised birds and goats, and a good dog has always prevented predator losses, and this is in the mountains of Alaska with bears, wolves, foxes, and coyotes running around.

Guys, Back again from watch in the NFR. I have been having these dirt, sneakie, Goat killing outfits come with in 40 yds of the house! In Broad Daylight. They are some rotten. son-of-a-bucks
I have NO Love for them! Again KILL them All!!!!! and do not put them on the endangered species list.
Later,
John A.

I wouldn't feel too bad about it. Them things need population control. In the east half of the province, they contests and draws for the hunters. Gets the PETA type real upset though

Closest call I ever had was one night driving home from work in NE Minnesota. We were having kind of a long slow snowfall with the big flakes. I was driving a Ford Aerostar with the all wheel drive. I guess it was about midnight or so. I'm creeping along at about 35 mph when this doe comes walking into the road from the left side. I ease over a little bit, but don't want to slip off the road. As I go passed her, I am looking at her face staring into my window.
