$75,000 + dollars lost to Deeres!

Just saw on the news at Hampton, Iowa. A Christmas Tree farm that lost about 10,000 Christmas trees to a herd of Deere. Reporter said they est. the monetary loss is around $75,000 - $80,000. Owners say Hunting Season, & a big Fence are in order now! They bought trees from another farmer so help satisfy customers; so they dont loose them to someone else!

8 foot T posts with 3 or 4 strands of electric fence along with back up power should do it. I've had good results so far with a strand chest high and 2 close to the ground for racoons at the garden, but I'm not protecting $10,000 worth of trees either.

Naw, something not right here. Deer don't eat evergreens except as last resort, when snow is deep and everything else is buried. Some kind of scam going on here.

I can't speak of trees but deere will ruin a good corn field costing you thousands. Deere hunting season needs to be expanded. They are becoming a real problem.

Just 1 deere ran through my corn field.
When it left there wasn't any corn left standing ...

I guess you have never seen the damage deer can do during the rutting seasom. They don't have to eat them to ruin them.

Takes a 12 ft high, 10 strand, high tension and electrified fence to keep whitetails out of an apple orchard, and even still once in a while one will be in there.

Not hard to believe- we had two fields of corn across the road from each other, one side had houses on both sides of the field, the other had no houses along side. 150 bushels per acre on the home sided field, 97 on the opposite side of the road. Same soils, same fertilizer, same hybrid. Whole area of field about 100 to 150 yards back from road was eaten by Bambi. Loss on eaten side was 12 ac. X approx 50 bu. X $7 = $4200. I side with the tree farmer!!!!!

that's the problem with hunting horns only they will become overpopulated and a nuisance real quick ,solution is open season on them especially doe's

In IND deer eat the the tender tops off of evergreen trees if they can reach them. They like the new branch shoots on them, too. Deer react to scents. You can buy stuff to attract them and stuff to turn them away. Milorganite is a repellent we use down here that turns them away. They don't like the smell of it. Put some in an old sock and hang it on a tree branch. It has to be replenished every few weeks. We can get it cheap at wally world down here in 40 lb bags. Is temporary solution, electric fence is best way but most expensive way to keep them out of the plantation. We are way overpopulated with deer down here.

The scent, that they react to best, is a german shepherd dog, guarding the tree patch. You lay out invisible fence wire, and feed the guard dogs at a different spot, each day, and the deer won't get the trees!

Deer are worse than rats and all other vermin combined.Dummies in local subdivisions go crazy if sonmeone shoots a deer but are always complaining that they eat all their ugly shubbery.

I am a little surprised that they didn't spray the trees to deter the deer destruction.

There is a spray that which gives a horrible bitter taste to plants or trees which causes deer to leave the vegetation alone after just one bite.

I think the name of the product may be Deer Off.

At my place, deer will eat evergreens most times of the year. Not their first choice but they love blue and norway spruce.

This is on top of the damage the bucks do when rubbing the velvet off their antlers.

They also love all the buds in the spring on the deciduous trees. Plus they destroy the bark on the maples/oaks etc.

I have roughly 4000 spruce and 2500 deciduous. So they have lots of choices.

Not sure the cost of fencing is something I want to tackle. So for now, we hunt.
