M.F. 50 fluid choice and amount?

brotherinlaw got hisself a M.F. 50 gas the hydrolics didnt work. He pulled the cover and found messed up linkage. Fixed it. Said fluid had lots of water in it so he drained it. His question to me was: what fluid to use and how much? I thought I could get him an answer real fast off the net. Wrong!! I know in most older tractors in our area we use light weight non detergent oil but never been around any M. F. before. Just a note. He does have a manual on its way but snow is set to get here first and he wants to be able to use this if needed. Thanks for any help.

GL-1 90W same as pre 1953 Fords.

Not certain about quantity but probably 8 - 10 quarts.

Should be around 8 gallons. Put in 6-7 and wait. It takes a while for the fluid to make it to the stick. I put in all ten and it didn'y show on the stick. Boy did I have a mess in the morning. I used universal tractor fluid and have had no issues, but others here advise differently. My MF dealer recommends Permatran. The tractor originally called for 85W GL-1 in the winter and 90W in the summer.

The hydraulic and transmission oil are in the same compartment in a 50.Hygaurd hydraulic oil will work and won't get stiff in the winter. Not sure what it holds, the dipstick will tell you when it's full.I always keep 5 gallon around, most new tractors use it for hydraulic oil also.
