Anyone ever use a nose twitch??? I hate the thought of them but needed one today.... One I have just slipped off several times.... We deal mostly with trust, but if we have to restrain, want it to work.....If you use them, can you post a pic of what you use and how it's done????? Don't think mine was squeezing tight enough or in the right place....

Thanks.... Dave

Yes, the chain type, twist until you have a good hold, we have the other type, aluminum kind of round at the end, squeeze like pliers no I don't know the actual or proper names for each, and no need to, absolutely hate using these things, hate it with a passion, the only time is a dire situation or when the vet tells me too, the chain type works best for me, as I can control it better, if a horse is going to go nuts, forget it, I really try and be fair about it, sometimes you need that grip on them to help, thankfully its not very often. I do not, nor do I ever want to see someone use an ear twitch, I'd do the same to them after laying them in a full spreader with the beater going. Horses do remember, maybe these kinds of things more so, we have one retired from racing, who has a lot of talent, but given the chance, he'd stomp a person, fearless, laughs at a whip, someone was not kind to him or he was picked on in the herd, he won several hundred thousand in his career, better drug him if you put a twitch on this guy, would be bad news if not.

Done correctly, will not slip off, she had one corner of his upper lip, you have to cinch the entire upper lip, my vet would be pi$$ed if I slipped while he's working on a horse.

I apply it as needed, (amount of pressure to cinch that chain) but if that horse is set on going nuts, you have to use care, or change techniques, for the most part, it works fine, just hate doing it.

I don't have a pic of mine, but its made from a tool handle with a hole drilled through it for the 3/8 smooth rope. They can be made with very small chain, too. I've never used the chain type.

I don't like them either, but like you said, sometimes they are necessary for the good of the horse. I think I've needed mine once.

You can purchase a twitch called a "humane twitch". It looks sort of like a weird pair of pliers. I've never used one so I don't know how well they work.

P.S. One of the best sources for animal supplies of all kinds is www.jefferspet.com. I've used them for 20+ yrs. They have supplies of all types for cattle, sheep, goats, rabbits (all kinds of livestock), horses, dogs & cats. Great source for supplies.

When I was in vet school we used a twitch some times. It was a wood handle about 24" long (like a broom handle) with a looped chain on the end. We would grab the upper lip and nose put the chain around it and gently twist. We would apply just enough twist to get the horse to obey.

Downsides, some horses lip and nose were hard to get a hold of to apply the twitch, some horses would start throwing their head if you applied too much pressure, some horses it just flat didn't work so we would sedate them with xylazine. Sucked when a horse would throw it's head and get the twitch out of your hands. Then the handle became a dangerous obstacle to dodge.

Hi Dave 2 I only trim Dairy Cattle. I have a fully hydraulic upright chute and chipper wheels to do the trimming. I have a horse and two donkeys and hire a farrier to do them. Sorry I could not be of more help. Bill

Chain twitch I've used in the past there was a right direction and a wrong direction to turn handle. I can't remember which direction but chain wadded up in one direction. Twitches also work on the ears.

first time I saw one used, I was gonna beat the guy usin it... Why I bought the "humane" one... Think there was more stress and trauma in having one slip off than using a good one the right way.... Live and learn.... I'd never use one in place of training for routine stuff but yesterday's episode proved the need for good equipment.

Another alternative would be to get one of the well renowned "horse whisper's" that appear on RFDTV such as Clinton Anderson,Reis,Parelli or Goodnight to come whisper your horse into accepting what ever it is you're wanting to do to it.
