Made my chore loop tis morning and saw the lid open on a water tank. I always bolt them fast so went to look. Someone had stuck a stick behind the drinker tongue so it wouldn't work and opened the lid (about a 12" hole) so the horses would put their head in to drink (you could see hair)...
4 horses on the pasture are always under my feet when I get there and only two came to meet me. Went to find the other two and found them heads hanging in a cormer... Called them and about freaked when they turned.....

Sent pics to the wife at work and asked her what to do/which vet to call.... She said bring them home and she'd be there to take care of them.... hour and a half after finding them, they look much better and are recovering from the woozy shots........... Didn't even cross my mind in my panic/rage that she takes care of the animal doctoring and has everything on hand....
And people wonder why I'm such a small puncture wound when they hang around pastures and the horses.....

(quoted from post at 05:45:48 11/29/11) Time for a deer camera, on the watering bowl.

Hope I never see or find out who did it...... I'd be shipped back home when I was done with them....... Know it hurt when it happened, but it was prolly nothing compared to the cleaning and stapling we had to do later..... These are our kids and when they hurt... I hurt.......

I don't know how in heck you deal with so many people in and around your pastures. What rotten people to mess with a watering device, so now what, you need a watering device that is both horse and people proof ? Even if you wronged someone or similar, don't mess with the horses..... just a rotten thing someone did, and that will leave a scar.

Yep keep plenty of blue coat on hand and a sewing kit....

I know I'd be livid if it happened to my horse. There'd be no holding me back until at least a similar amount of flesh had been removed from the perpetrator. I wouldn't be using any pain killer on the perp either...... maybe some rock salt in the wound as well.

You're dealing with some real cowards there - taking it out on your horses instead of dealing directly with you. Good luck...

Sorry about the injuries to your horses.

Premeditated meanness to injure a harmless animal is senseless and unforgivable.

Be patient; eventually you'll find the coward that did this to your horses.

I assume it's a person that knows how waterers work. Any rival horse people in your area?

As others have said, what a bunch of low-lifes to go after your horses instead of confronting you directly.

In reference to the wound in the first pic, (you probably already know this) watch out for infection under the skin that is scraped down. There could be some hair or debris under the skin.

My vet would say lots of hydro treatment (flushing with water) then good cream anti-biotic to keep the wound soft.

As said in one of the other posts, you can use diapers or feminine hygiene products for bandages then wrap with vet wrap just tight enough to keep in place. Wrapping in a figure 8 helps prevent slipping. This would protect the wound and be flexible enough to allow the horse to eat.

I would be tempted to SSS if I caught the person(s) who did this. My horses are like kids to me, too.

Unfortunately, I see news stories about horrendous cruelty to animals in these times.

From working in the security industry, I know there is a harmless dye you can put on items that will permanently stain skin. It helps to identify thieves, etc. If you think they might come back, you might get some and put it on the waterers.

I also agree with posting a game cam. They might try something else and you don't want these low lifes around when your foals are born.

I would use nitrofurazone ointment or silver sulfadine cream. Silver sulfadine cream helps to heal the wound and reduce scarring. Also helps keep flies off. You should clean the wound daily with chlorhexidine soap and water especially to get the old ointment off and before reapplying more ointment. There is some pain there too so I would use some banamine paste to control pain and inflammation. Horse's skin granulates very well.

First thing that crossed my mind. Some people are just PURE EVIL!!!!!!.Could be th jerks cutting mistle toe in the orchard. Toss up. Still Dam EVIL. Sorry for the horses pain and Dave & his Mrs, to have to suffer along. MY prayers sent to them and the horses recovery with out any complications. REGARDS, LOU.

BluKote burns bad, but is really effective stuff. Was milking one night in the parlor and the kid I was working with got a nasty cut from getting kicked. We cleaned it up as best we could and then sprayed the cut with BluKote, and it darn near dropped him to his knees. Tough kid too, ended up in the Army and served two tours. No infection at least.
