Single speed transmission

I have a single speed transmission with an e brake attached. The gear ratio is "about" 3.2 to 1 in either forward or reverse. The input shaft, clutch splines, and input shaft tube resemble an old IHC transmission, but the bolt pattern doesn't fit any old IHC bell housings I have. It is orange in color. Could this have been used on an engine (1800 rpm os so?) for PTO power? I says its from the 40's or 50's. Anyone ever came across something like this? Sorry I don't have capabilites to post a picture.

Does the output shaft turn slower than the input? If so it is a reduction gear, which was used to power something that did not need to turn many RPMs

1800/540=3.3333

so if it"s an overdrive, i"d guess it would be used to increase a 540 pto to 1800 to drive a generator. if it"s the other way around, maybe used for an 1800 rpm engine to make 540 like on an engine driven baler or other power unit? just a guess

Yes, the output runs slower than the input. If used like a PTO it would have to be run in reverse for proper rotatin. Could it be some kind of combine transmission, but it has a u-joint hookup on the back. Thanks...

I havn"t had the transmission apart yet. I do have a gas driven arc welder with a shot engine. Might this transmission hold up to install it backwards in reverse to get 1500 rpm"s from the tractor PTO to run the welder. Just an idea>>>
