OT MUSIC, IrisDement, Our Town

We had to bury a farm friend of 33 years today and this song came to mind. Like they do in small towns, after the funeral the ladies of our Lions Club cooked up a good meal for family n friends. Then we sat around and shared with his adult children good memories we had over the years which they seemed to appreciate.

Okay, some may hate these songs or her singing, but if you give her a chance she sorta grows on ya even though shes a Plain Jane hillbilly soundin homely kind of thing, her songs are great. I saw her live performance and enjoyed it. Anyone who has grown up in a small town then seen them wither away will appreciate "Our Town" listen to the words.

She is a major talent... HATE, HATE country pop but love music that's real & she is real.
A lot of little towns that depended on farm families are drying up & turning into "coyote towns" just existing on the leavings.
I grew up near a town(Holyrood, Ks) that had almost 1000 population & now is 400 some. sad...
but like they say "nuthin good ever lasts"

Sorry for your Loss of a friend today John

I enjoyed the Ladies music too .. just can't see that she is on the homely side ? might not be as filled out as some of our Northern corn fed gals are , but she is just as purdy as her voice.

Always liked her, think she did some songs with Emmy Lou Harris another good one.Of course I like a wide variety of music from Patsy Cline to Country Joe MacDonald to Steppenwolf and most in between.Another good one that wasn't "mainstream" is Wanda Jackson

John I too am sorry for your loss. True friends are always so hard to come by.The family of my passing friends asked me to play at he funeral. I did(reluctantly) and it made an emotional impression on my mind and a hurt to my heart every time I think of em.I Have NO CLOSE FRIENDS LEFT as I'm the last link in the chain so to speak. The music you presented on your post was a gracious and kind gesture.I appreciated it!!! Thanks for sharing .Warmest regards LOU.

Either you love Iris Dement or you hate her. I always liked her but my wife can't stand her and starts making howling sounds if I play her music.

Interestingly, Iris Dement grew up not in the south but in Long Beach, CA.

My condolences on the loss of your friend.
My wife got me hooked on Iris a few years back.
Look up "In Spite of Ourselves" written by John Prine and sung by him and Iris. Great song!
Another "Off-Beat" country singer is Nanci Griffith. She sings a great song "Love at the Five and Dime".
Have a nice Thanksgiving.

Loss of a friend - never easy. But for me music has always helped me through the down times. Sounds like it works for you too. The Iris Dement tunes were a great choice there...
And for a good chuckle, the one of her with John Prine.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Tony

For sure, Nanci Griffith and Robert Earl Keene Jr. and Lyle Lovett, those Texas singers are all great and WHAT STORY TELLERS THOSE ARE

Had her cd with that on it for over 15yrs now it seems. Back porch music at it's finest. Hits ya like "Class of 57" by Statler Bros. Another fine ole relic is "Ole Rivers" by Walter Brennan. You can't get through that cd with dry eyes. That's what I named my ole "B" JD. We played "Ole Rivers" at my Father-inlaws funeral. Get the whole cd if ya have a chance. Grandpaw Mc Coy did it good.
