I know you're gettin weary of my little project, but I just ran all the receipts across the adding machine.

$377 to completely rebuild the transmission and transfer case in this old truck. If I didn't know how to spin wrenches, I wouldn't be able to function; I'd be totally horseback. :>(

Doesn't include the 4 gallons of oil that it will take to make 'er spin tho.

Allan

Doesn't sound too bad for tranny AND transfer case. Nothing like doing your own work, only problem is if it fails you got nobody else to cuss at.

Allan....I wish I knew just half of what you know about fixing things. It sure comes in handy when you can repair your own stuff. Not only the cost issues, but the satisfaction of independence and getting things done when you want.

Brian

Yep,

We're probably talkin' $2800 or so at the Chevy store.

If it fails, we do it again.......but it 'taint gonna fail. :>)

Allan

Yer just down right lucky that old girl came with a portable work bench must have saved a bit of overhead costs (Grin )

Reason I say that is I'm going in on the 1st of Dec to have this growth taken off my nose..

Hospital called me today and needed to know If I would have my $157.00 CO pay for the meat slab the dr is going to use.

Yeah Buddy,

Get that thing taken care of......If ya have your health, you have everything.

If ya can't handle the co-pay right now, heck! I'll belly up to the task. :>)

Hope all goes well for ya,

Allan

Thanks Allan I knew ya would.... Heck just let me rent yer truck Ya can even let the tranny on there.. only need about as much room as a half beef... we could use it for an hour I know ya wouldn't charge that much ... LOL

I don't charge friends anytime.......for anything. That's why I'm broke all the time. :>)

You're a good-un! Get well in a big hurry! :>)

Allan

Run this across your adding machine. $100 annual registration, 600 annual insurance, $300 annual maintenance, 0000 depreciation, that's nice, $150 annual debt service, (it's worth 2500 right?)
So you save 2500 miles on your new truck for $1050, PLUS the fuel costs are probably higher per mile. How is that saving?
I thought the only way to pencil out the newer diesel pickups was mileage north of 250K WITHOUT major maintenance.

Oh you negative thinker you!

This thing started out as an old $100 piece of junk. Look at it now..........

Still just an old $100 piece of junk. :>)

Allan

I'm not gonna paint this truck, darnit! :>)

Am gonna strap a goose-neck hitch on 'er tho. Will tie 'er up to a trailer and get a picture of that someday soon.

You know, just to test out my tranny rebuild. :>)

Allan

Just got my 3500 chev with a 4L80-E out of the tranny shop for 1650.00. Still had problems shifting in to overdrive and locking. GM put on a throttle position senser for another 350. Where is Allen when you need him.

When I first saw the trans in pieces on the back of the truck, I thought for sure it would end up behind the barn with the trans still in pieces in the bed. Just kidding Allan.I knew you would get it back together, good going. Those auto trannys scare me. The only repair I did on a auto trans was in my past life on a 55 chevy powerglide. Stan

really would stand out in a black suit or a tu tone like mine... Scuse the mud .

Weren't those old cast-iron things just a hoot to work on? And, I'll just betcha that tiny little drive pin for the rear oil pump was sheared, wasn't it?

Did my first "Cast Iron Kate" when I was but 10 or 12 years old; long before I was old enough to get a drivers' license.

Stan, yer makin' me feel really, really long in the tooth this morning! :>(

Allan

That's the trouble with a lot of these guys any more. They just don't stop and think.

Can't even begin to count how many times folks have brought me an outfit with a "shudder", a "vibration" or a "no-shift/wrong shift" symptom which had absolutely nothing to do with the transmission itself.

Sorry ya got ripped, Pard.

Allan

Most places won't even open up a transmission anymore. Anything wrong they just want to swap in reman unit $$$$

I was in at the local Chevy place.

Two fellers in there told me on two different occasions that they wouldn't even dare touch one of these transmissions, because as they seemed to think, "They had bad valve bodies."

Well, no they didn't. The design utilized cast iron married to aluminum and ya gotta stop and think about that when working on the little darlin's. :>)

Allan

Allan you nailed it. As I remember it was a sheared pin. on the pump. Don't forget your birth date is only a date on the calender. Stan

My first car was a 55 chevy. Quit shifting into high. The repair shop charges me 5 cents for the key or pin and a whole lot more for the labor. This was in 63.

It was kind of interesting how things were evolving during that time.

Remember how if you had a dead battery or bad starter, that you could push start the car? Get 'er up to about 30mph and drop it in gear to start?

It was just flat "expected" in those days; I mean, gear drives would do it (had for years) for goodness sake, so why shouldn't automatics as well? :>)

Anyway, the same tiny little drive pin was turning that rear pump and forcing the engine rotation from the driveshaft on that deal too. :>)

Thanks for shakin' my feeble ol' memory you guys, haven't thought about that in years!
