Stories are going around Hay bales {squares} are going for $5-$6 per bale and $130 in Texas and Oklahoma???

In Michigan here the average buy is $3.50 on squares, and $40 for 4 x5 rounds.

Any truth to that??

What are the prices in your area??

Front range of Colorado small bales are going for $6.00 to $10.00 each. 4X4 and 3X3 are going anywhere from $200 to $300 a ton. Many of the growers are taking advantage of the shortage in Texas and either selling it to Texas farms at an inflated price or selling it at the same price local. My supplier took care of me this year and put up 1,000 bales for me at $4.50. That I can live with.

Yes,but half of it is freight. In s.e.Texas most hay is coming from La.,Ms.,or Al.Square bales of bermuda are coming from Florida and cost about $12 at the feed store. The last I bought was rice straw,5x5,from La,$70 delivered.Every day I see trailer loads of hay heading north west of houston. You couldnt pay me to haul hay through Houston at rush hour.On the news Ihave heard of 2 lost loads of hay and 2 loads of hay burning on freeway in Houston.A lot of crazy drivers in Houston. My cattle readily eat rice straw and are doing well on it(they say 8% protien). There has been a little hay cut here in the last month but not near what is needed because many cattlemen have been feeding hay all summer.A lot of rye grass has been planted and things are greener now than they have been since april. Thanks to God for the recent rains.More rain is needed as the ponds are still very low.

I am selling 4x5 rounds out of the barn for $65 each in PA. $6-$7 a bale for small squares delivered. Fuel is so high its tough to even truck the hay in from far away. Prices at the hay auction are $200-$500 per ton. From what I have heard half the time you cant even find GOOD quality grass hay to buy even if you had no budget...

Prices in central Oklahoma are high. Small squares are going for $8.00 to 12.00 a bale. 4X5 rounds are about $100.00. I have a patch of Bermuda that usually makes 200 rounds in a average year, this year it made 39. Most of the cost for the out of state hay is trucking IMHO.

Drought is at the highest level (extreme) for most of the state.

We've gotten a little rain, but not enough to relieve the drought conditions.

Weather forecast is for the drought to continue into next year.

18 wheeler load of fert Brome hay from Missouri to Tx is costing me $61 per 4X5.5 bale just in freight plus the cost of hay.

In South texas, $130 to $145 for round bales and as of last Thursday, I had to pay $13.50 for the small square bales. Nothing like owning a few hay burning horses you can't claim. :)

stories abound but-- truck after truck heading down us highway 83 South Dakota to texas. Alfalfa is bringing $120 to $200 in the field, in big rounds depending on quality and depth of pockets. 600+ miles x $4@mile adds another $100 a ton. really hard to get back hall almost all trucks returning empty. Crazy but true.I was in phoenix recently small squares were [email protected]

In north eastern Calfornia. Dairy hay shipped to Central Valley is $250 plus a ton. Local retail hay is nearing $300. There is a shortage of hay in our area.

Thats about right to low. I put a truck into San Antionio two weeks ago, cost me 3500 in freight plus the cost of the hay and another truck into Plano for 2500. The higher bill was for a 53 foot trailer. Both loads were going to brokers. Thats 83 dollars and 65 dollars per roll in freight. Plus the cost of the hay. Its got to be inside stored with good strings though. Im at 35 to 45 depending on when the orders were booked. My hay, and what I bought early Im at 35, been there for years, what Im buying now Ive got to get 45 out of with what I've been having to pay and its getting hard to find 4x5's inside stored at any price.

A load of squares went out today, pretty nice alfalfa, better than 80 percent with balance orchard grass. 1075 miles each way, they came and got it, 6.50 per bale for the hay put on the trailer but not stacked.
