rings stuck

I just got an 8n running today and it was smoking. Engine sounds good and has 30lbs of oil pressure. Can anyone tell me what they use to loosen up rings. Hope I can free them before I have to install new ones. Thanks for the help. ED

Are you sure you mean rings stuck, as opposed to worn? You say the engine is running, blowing blue smake and maintaining 30 psi oil pressure. Do you mean that you suspect your rings are worn?

I'm not saying that your oil ring isn't stuck, it just doesn't sound like it. If you want you could try Marvel's Mystery Oil. Just shoot some into the cylinder, and let it sit a little while before you start it. Some people suggest Seafoam etc. Either way, it it only works about half the time on stuck oil rings. The other half, well...

Back, when I was in college, the discovery was made, by mass spectography, I think, that er, marvel mystery oil IS atf!

If all of the suggestions fail pull the head and see how much ridge is at the top of the cylinders. If there's a ridge your cylinders are probably worn. You may need a new set of sleeves and pistons. Hal

Fill the cylinders with ATF and let it sit a week. Be sure to put the plugs back in to keep dirt etc out. Pull the plugs and spin it over, ya it will make a mess but hey how else are you going to clear the cylinders. Put the plugs back in and start it up and let it run till good and warm and if you had stuck rings that should fix it but if it is wore out then nothing short of a rebuild will help it
