John Deere M implements

I have a M. 1950 model. I have a bottom plow and tillage tool. I have a clearance problem. I cant get the equipment off the ground far enough to get it across the yard. My farm is acroos the hwy and I need enough to cross the rd. Anyone else had this problem. I do not want to upgrade to a 3 point hitch.

First I would make sure you have enough hydraulic oil, but you probably already did that! On our M I took the original hitch off and built a 3-point for it, but it seems the draft links were adjustable or they could be. On my 3-point I had a chain on one side and a turnbuckle on the other. That way I could level my implements and they could float on the terrain. You might have to shorten your draft links.

I have a 1948 M which has been on the farm since we sold off the horses in 1955. There should be plenty of lift to move tillage equipment down the road. lift up the seat and fill the hydro with oil until it comes out of the overflow. [It"s there under the fill tube.] I use 10w30w in the hydro and the engine. The next problem could be in the lift arms. If the original lift linkage has been lost, someone may have replaced them. Are they too long? Is the tow bar bent? This is a good little tractor which uses very little gas but does a lot of work. Ed

How long are the chains supposed to be. There is very little on the net about these tractors. I love to here it work. I will check this in tomorrow and see about the oil. Thanks

We sold ours last spring, we just didn't use it much anymore and needed the garage space for the Farmall C with the mower. I don't think I have any good pictures of it but I had access to a lot of good shop equipment so it made the fabrication easy. I think you could buy bottom links from a good farm supply but they might not be long enough, but they could be cut and lengthened. The top link bracket bolted on the pulley gearbox, if you don't have a pulley it would be easier, just use a flat plate with a top link bracket welded onto it.

Seems like a elementery problem to me , adjust the chain,, LOL ,, or maybe add oil , my 1st tractor was a M Jdeer ,had a Tobacco setter , Plow and cultivator, and always leaked a little oil from power trol, ,

Do you have the right pusher arms that lift the cultivators? There are 2 different brackets that go under the front of the tractor for the plow. One was made for the M and the other one was made for the MT. The lift chains on the draw bar for the M and MT are also different. You need to make sure someone has not swapped any of these items out.

You might not even have the right plow for it ?

I see ads all the time for them saying "fits M / MT " Well these are NOT interchangable because of the different beams used for the different models.
I think the owners manual or parts book ? of the plow gives dimensions of what the hitch beam should be.

Do you have the sway bar that fits under the centertube of the tractor on it? If not, there is a sway bar that slides into the carrier bracket just forward of the transmission case. This sway bar has a connecting rod that goes back to the drawbar and has two holes to set how far down it goes. The long tongue of the plow and rear mounted implements goes under the round bar of the sway bar to hold the rear of the implement up when the hydralics are raised.
