dog question for dave 2

hey dave...and anyone else who may know
i know you are an internationally known breeder of austrailian shepards...
how are the "minis" and "toys" of that breed? they have been showing up in the local want-ads and i am curious if they retain the same personality and spirit of an aussie...
don't know if we'd ever get a 2nd dog...but they are awfully cute

I`m not nearly as much an expert as Dave or others I`m sure, but the mini aussies I have seen were nuerotic, and nowhere near the same caliber of intelligence as a "original" aussie. I guess that is what happens when you try to turn a working breed into a "toy".

There are plenty of real ones around if you are considering one and you will be much happier with it than the stuff that is inbred etc to come up with mini/toy of any breed...... That's my opinion and I'm sure there'll be an expert or two pop in and say I don't know what I'm talking about... But you got what you asked for. Google some pics and compare...

Dave

figured that was the case...
you'd hate to lose the personality of any breed of dog...
we have a golden right now and were looking into minis for a 2nd dog but everything we read says they lose the personality...and for a dog like a golden or lab or aussie...what makes them so great is the personality.

Depends on the breeder, some will go for the smallest, tiniest animals they can get, not realizing they are producing defects and inferior genetics. Good breeders with "minis" strive to keep the superior Aussie genetics, structure and traits just in a smaller package. And yes almost an expert, sitting here with a 4 week old litter of 8 at my feet as I type. Our "minis" possess the natural working instinct and look just like the standards only in a smaller package.
