My friend was telling me that he got his trailer registered in maine and saved on fees and taxes. I looked into if this was legitimate or not and saw that many people. I tried it and ended up working out greatly. I googled maine trailer registrations and was all set.

Do they have a permenant plate like we do in Michigan? We buy it once and it's good for a lifetime on that trailer as long as it's owned by that particular owner.

Sure isn't that way here. Plate money EVERY YEAR. Last We heard it was $86.00 a year.Thats Wisconsin any way. LOU.P.s.Ours sets, non using. Up on planks.

One of my former co-workers has a trailer with Maine tags. He told me the tags were good forever. I think it has 3 axles under it. He has hauled his BIL car's with it I think it was near DC. He tow's it with a Ford Dump truck.

Just about everybody in my area of NY has Maine plates on their trailers and it's 100% legal - so far. NY DMV is trying to get new laws to stop it.

I have Maine plates here in NY and lifetime Michigan plates on some stuff I have in northern Michigan - but . . . State of Michigan is trying to end the "lifetime" thing. There are two proposals. One to end it completely, and the other to honor the ones that now exist but no longer grant new ones. My Michigan plates are in my father-in-law's name and he's 87 years old. I wonder which will expire first - the plates or him (no offense pops if your reading).

I have a "lifetime New York State reservoir fishing license I bought in 1974. They will no longer accept it. I also have NAPA "lifetime" warrantees on many parts that now - only get honored once and then what they call "lifetime" is over.

I have a small, 5x10 trailer for the ATV and odd jobs around the farm. Registration went from 12.50 in 2010 to 27.00 this year. How did Zero get into SD?

Light trailer tags not required in SC. I have 5 home built trailers and one factory gooseneck, no tags, no inspection. Insurance on the factory trailer.

Didn't pay attention to the details, but MN just had a big bust on folks that registered their RV stuff in Montana, I guess MN got upset about the lost revenue, fines & penalties to be handed out....

Maine trailer tags have the expiration date stamped into the tag just like the tag number itself. They all expire on Feb.28 of some year depending on how many years you buy the tag for. The max number of years is 12.

I don't recall ever seeing a "permanent" Maine trailer tag.

Actually it isn't "legal" in NY and it never has been. The State just never pursued it much. Just before I retired from the NYSP a couple years back they were starting to look at it a little. Not sure where it stands today, but they were looking at addressing things.

maybe some one can explain this to me paying taxes in a state that you don't live in. this is my thought i bet the state that your paying the taxes in just love it they get the money to keep there roads up and don't have to raise there taxes. they also don't have to put up with you. then you get to drive on roads your not welling to pay for. really just don't make since. i am quite sure that we are all unfairly taxed. i live in Christian county in ky which is a wet county where they sale booze now a few years back Hopkins and Trigg boarding county's were dry county no liquor sales. on both side of christian county there were a several liquor stores that my county just sorta let them run wild because all the drinkers from the two boarding county bough all there liquor in my county and it brought a lot tax revenue in. when those county went wet christian county lost a lot of revenue and all but one liquor store on county line closed. it may make you feel good getting your trailer tag in a the boarding state but it sure it don't help keep your roads up and makes every one else pack your load as well

When I did my DITY move from Buffalo to Tenn, I registered my giant flat bed trailer in Maine. It was cheap, but once I got to Tenn I realized that when operating in Ky and TN i didn't even need to register the trailer. If I had to register it again, I would probably register it in Maine. It was $40 for two years.

it was that way tell this year now in ky if it over 14ft it needs to be license and have brakes on it even if its a farm trailer. mine was like 37.00 it a 20ft dual tandem if your pulling it with a truck that 10thoushand lbs you need a dot number. even if your a farmer.it use to be if you pulled your trailer with a truck carrying farm plates it didn't need to be license but all that has changed i say by jan 2012 they well start enforcing it more then they are now.

I asked the main DMV office in Albany and the person on the phone told me it was legal. True or not I won't swear to it since I haven't read the statue that applies.

More often I have officials tell me something is NOT legal -and after I read up - I find out it is.

Why is that I figured the Michigan "lifetime" plates would be short lived? About the time they figured out they killed a golden goose for a one time lump sum? Right now the "lifetime" plate cost $75 for trailers less than 2000 lbs. Heavier are more costly. Will take several years of yearly trailer registrations to get to those levels.

As I live in ny I looked into the Maine plates and got the feeling you wouldnt be on the up and up going through maine for the plates, couldnt really get a straight answer from NYSDOT and finally decided not to risk it. Bill M.

We added my name to my dad's trailers in Mich so they are titled jointly, so when he passes (he's 90) I won't have to buy the permanent trailer plates again. Not trying to rush his demise, just trying to keep from paying twice.

Do as you wish, but the crux of the issue is that you are avoiding paying fees in NY by fraudulently claiming you have a physical address in Me. that you reside at. It's not legal, never has been, I doubt it ever will be.

BTW- my experience in over 20 years of trying to get accurate info from DMV is that they rarely get things outside the normal questions correct. It's also my experience that the fact they have zero clue what they are talking about has never, ever stopped them from dispensing incorrect information.

Have a stock trailer registered and tagged in Md. Bought a new flatbed, friend tells me to register and tag it in Maine. Called Maine tag girl, no problem, send me the bill of sale and $150 for 10 year tags. "how about the stock trailer?" "Send me a copy of the registration, and $150 for 10 year tags" Total cost, $335 for two trailers for ten years- $35 to register the flatbed in Maine. This was in August. In November of that year, I got a renewal notice from Md. DMV for the stock trailer for ONE YEAR at a cost of $162.50! The money hungry democratic bureaucrats are costing themselves money here in Maryland, home of Gov. Owe'Malley!
