4020 deere pto

Hi, my boss has a 4020 john deere and the pto keeps running with the lever shut off. You can hook a manure spreader up to it and the pto will still slowy be running with the pto lever shut off. Any ideas?? thanks

Powershift or Synchro-Range? Either way it sounds like the PTO clutch is dragging a little or the PTO brake has failed

I think the PTO had a hydraulic clutch on the powershift tractors. You really need to plumb a gauge into the PTO clutch, brake, and transmission lube test ports to know for sure whats going on. Clutch and brake pressures won't really tell you much, watch the lube gauge more than anything. When the PTO is engaged, the lube pressure should dip a little then bounce right back to what it was. Do the same when you disengage the PTO.

You might want to watch clutch pressure when the PTO is disengaged to see if there's a leaking valve. Both PTO clutch and brake should not have pressure at the same time.

You're correct the pto clutch on a powershift is hyd. I agree that a psi check of pto clutch & brake is needed.
