Issues with pertronix unit

Have a JD 3020 which is giving me fits. Put a pertronix on it some years back and couple days ago it started losing power and then would cut out suddenly. Put a new coil on and made up a LED test light to make sure the resistor wire and rest of harness wasn't the source of problem. Test light indicates everything else is ok.

Question is have any of you out there had a Pertronix cut out intermitantly? Just want to make sure before I drop the money and time waiting.

Yes

Loose magnetic rotor, make sure the screws are tight.

I was having problems with a pertronix unit last summer in a Ford. I contacted the company and they sent me the test procedures in the photos above. Hope this helps

Do you have a carb with the solenoid?? I've seen a few of the carb solenoids cause this, assuming your tractor is a gas. chris

Dad's 3020 with Pertronix ignition acted that way last spring while disking. Tracked it down to a plugged gas filter. My experience with the ignition modules is they either work or they don't. Once they quit they don't come back to life.

Had one die outright, out of warranty, but not very old, so I put the points back in.

I ended up doing the same thing. It was acting like it was a fuel problem and I chased it for months. I had hard starting, it would die at idle, backfire at speed and adjusting the carb richer seemed to help. Finally put points back in and it runs like a champ. Intermitent electronic problems can cause all sorts of ailments.
