picking earcorn

I picked 8 loads last saturday with a 323
& the corn quality was great, ours might
have husked alittle better. But I tell you
the 450 would not have pulled it in North
western Pa. We have so much MUDD you would
need a 4wd. I used a 2750 4x4 J/D & never
stopped, but there was a couple times I
thought I should have switched to a empty
wagon.... Did another 6 loads on Sunday, then
the came back again. It isn't looking too
good this week either. Picking corn is a good
job when the weather is nice, it sucks in knee
deep mudd.....

I recently drove past an Amish farm. A team of horses was pulling a wagon along slowly,no
driver, well trained! About 6 kids and 2 men were
walking along side picking corn and throwing it
into the wagon.Healthy exercise in the fresh air!

We picked 20 acres last saturday and sunday.....had our 4440 Deere on the picker.....with duals on both sides....yes it can be done IF you swing the drawbar over to the right AND are on WIDE rows.....I have pictures in my office.....was quite a sight!!!

Grey Goat, we had a neighbor down the road from our farm house that picked his corn the same way. They had a small 80 acre farm with a 4 acre corn field. 2 big tall big hoofed draft horses that were colored like Holstien cows, pulling a steel wheel wagon with a square wood grain box. The old man Bill Lear, his daughter in law Mary Lear and his three grand children Sue Lear, Ruth Lear, and Billy Lear picking up the down rows. Ever heard the term "down rows" They didn't have running water or a tv. They heated the home with a big cast iron coal stove and went to town only on Saturday. I spent many a Saturday evening with them listneing to the "Grand Ole Opry" on their old radio. This was southwest of Bevier Mo. in Macon County in the early 60's
