Well folks, Victor and I went shoping yesterday(Sat) and thought it best to save some money on item Sig Sauer so we determined that two is better then one. Rice lake paper shows EVIL creeping northwards towards us. Granted were isolated somewhat from help (if needed) So we purchased 1.S&W Walther PPK -S 380 for my use and a Spring field armory 1911 45 long slidefor Victor. Got em both for $1,100.oo NEW.I cant hold the S&W 44 Mag any more. Way to much punch. I darn well keep away from Victors Ruger 480 if I want to continue my piano playing effort. Was wondering if any other folks on here had to down size calibers for the same reason as I Did?? Any way , I'm now considered the JAMES BOND OF N W Wis. SO Now they can bring on the FAST CARS AND BEAUTIFUL GALS. Thought it all might be interesting to know about folks down sizing on caliber. Regards LOU AKA James Bonded with a 706 I.H. & O.C 46

Lou I like the 45...thats what I use for CC. The 380 you can keep.....if yer getting it for self defence you should only have to pull the trigger a couple of times.....and you are betting yer life on it!

Rick

Rick. James Bond does fine with his. lol. weak wrist makes for a lot of adjustment for calibers. close range makes a difference too.You will find that out when you reach 76 years old. My S&W 44 has a heck of a lot more punch then any 45 has, even with 45 hot loads. Still cant hold the S&W 44 any more, with out significant bone and muscel damage to occure when it fires.A man has to do what a man has to do. LOU.

Lou,

You and yours are welcome at my home. The Mrs. is damn good at the 9mm. Perhaps we together could prevent a re-occurrence of similar issues.

Hope your aim and ammo are fine.

I have a bad case of tinnitus from shooting a .44 Mag without ear protection some 38 years ago. I have a .357 revolver, but keep it loaded with .38 specials. I'm concerned that a .357 round might endanger a neighbor should I miss, though I use HPs in both loads. I wish I still had my old 12 ga. Winchester 1200 pump.

There. Aren't you happy now? Good S&W too, finely tuned before they go in a box. I'd rather hit something squarely with a small bullet, than miss with a big one....

Hey LOU check on a company in Mt Clemment Mi called MAGNAPORT INTERNATIONAL. They perform a deal on the end of the barrel called mangnaporting. They cut little slits on the end of the barrel that GREATLY reduce the punch. I have a 454 CASULL you can shoot a box thru one handed.

Great Reply. Gonna practice with it before the snow flys.Hope to hit what I aim at. Thanks for the reply Regards LOU.

Super trucker. Thanks for the info. My 44 mag is ported and HEAVY. Did good wih it about 10 years back. That gun would be hard to conceal for me.
Both guns now are S&W. Hope no one has to downsize in order to self protect. Lots of misfits out there now with evil on the brain. Take care. regards LOU

Good choices and great considerarion for others. Love the idea of the 12 guage.Got one also Double barrel side by side (made in Spain) Cant miss at close range. Thanks Regards LOU

Thank you for the warm invitation!!Glad your Ms is at the ready with the 9MM. Most ladies never handled a fire arm let alone keep one on CC. Every one is entitled to be secure in ones own home or when ever traveling around. Keep safe all. Regards LOU.

LOL Lou, just for your general info.....the only round that has a higher one shot stop rating than the 45ACP is the Glock 45 and only if you buy the real expensive rounds. The 44 comes in right behind the 45ACP. The deal there is the 45 is slower and has more time to expand. Where the 44 comes out much better is longer range......but then again the average gun fight takes place at less than 20 feet so for CC there really is no atvantage to the 44. Darn sure wouldn't want to hunt with the 45......Now sure the "study" isn't as good as we would hope it to be but there is some data there that is accurate. Most people who tend to argue the data like thier gun and are trying to justify it. Kinda like the Army generals saying that 70% of the troops like the M16/M4. 70% of the troops are in support jobs and don't get involved in fire fights! Sure they like a light weight gun with no recoil......thier life isn't hanging on how well it works! But when the combat troops are reporting time and again hitting a bad guy in the chest at 100 yards and not putting them down there is something wrong! And that is not addressing the jamming issues. My son just completed infantry school this past spring and they are teaching triple tap to the grunts now with the rifle!

Too bad about your wrist, hope they don't bother you too much. I shoot with some older guys around your age, some of even shoot the larger pistols still.

Rick

380 is a fine round to carry for self defense, I carry one all the time. is it the best? Probably not but it will do the job providing you hit where you need to. I really get tired of all the people who think anything less than a 45 or 44 is inadequate...

If needed for defense you hit them in the right place and a 22 will do. Besides if you have the light 380 with you and you don"t want to carry the heavy 45, which one is better? The one you have or the one you left at home?

Rick. Could be older guys do shoot heavy calibers with no apparent discomfort ,however I'm darn certain those guys don't suffer from Bi lateral neuropathy and low testoserone levels. Health issues brings down a wrath of circumstances that truly require changes in life style.(ie weapon selections.) Being able and willing to defend ones person doesn't require a cannon as the ultimate weapon. A 22 cal will bring down any individual set on doing harm. I would never ever down grade a persons choice of weapon that will protect his or her life. It all comes down to personal choice and circumstance that I would applaud his/her selection of weapon for their protection .The thing that evil doers back away from is that wondering if their victim is holding a cc weapon. Caliber doesn't matter in those circumstances. Robbers don't stand 50 feet away from their victim to ply their trade, but they do take it as up close and personal.Any gun shot wound has to be painfull in itself.Never been shot so I can't relate to that statement. I certainly will take all precaution to make an all out effote to protect my family and my self. Make no mistake, it is a war against thugs, robbers, and murderous individuals who seek to do harm to the law abiding citizen. As being a person who selects a weapon to take up my own defence from those who would kill me for what little posessions I own will come up against what ever I choose(and can use) to defend myself with.In that case no one weapon is better for use then the one they choose. LOU.

Jeff, Lou that all sounds good till the target is shooting back.....then marksmanship is just a tad bit more difficult! Thats a lot of the reason that cops will shoot up a bunch of ammo trying to put a bad guy down, excitement, stress and flying lead tends to make people who have been trained how to shoot forget most of what they have been taught! I do get a kick out of the "bullet placement" guys......most of em have never heard a shot fired in anger much less returened fire while under fire.

Rick

I was trying so hard to keep it all a secret. Now everybody knows. TANKS A HEAP!!!! The bullet would be just a case, no primer, powder. Boots with steel toes wouldn't help me at all. Bad legs, Couldn't walk in em for any length of time or distance. Gave 2 pair away years ago.My new nick name is James Bond, NOT BARNEY FIFE< are you tring to discourage the beautiful ladies to desert me in my hour of need??? ROTFLMAO. Regards LOU.

Rick. One on one ,distance, best marksman,DETERMINATION, tells the story. Big caliber doesn't enter into the equasion.Home invasion, street robery, store robery, car jacking, or any ogther senerio ,it doesn't matter who is shooting at who. Dopers whacked out of their minds wont hesitate to do a person in, reguardless of caliber used in the crime just to get the next fix. Keep safe. LOU

Agree. The mob has been killing people for decades with a single .22 round to head. Seems to work for them.

I have a Walther PPK-S 380. Use it to find out what ammo it likes to feed best. Mine does not feed some ammo very well. The sivler tipped feeds the best in it. I like my Colt 380 Government better it will eat any thing you put through it.

the Walther is a really good weapon that is easy to shoot and carry. alot better than carrying a can of pepper spray, even it is shaken and not stirred.

Down-sizing your ammo caliber/gun size is a wise decision, based on your health needs. When I took my Carry & Conceal course, the cop who teaches the class stressed that we should carry ONLY the largest caliber gun that we could COMFORTABLY handle. Hence I have a 5 round .38 Special revolver that I purchased a laser grip for - I wear it in the small of my back. I also have a Walther .22 semi-auto pistol, the magazine holds 10 rounds... that goes in my fanny pack. And just in case someone with bad intentions still manages to get a hold of me, I also a .22 deringer that goes in my pocket or bra. I'm a pretty good shot. I'm not afraid to travel without my husband. If anyone tries to do ill to me, I'll do my dangdest to stop them. If all else fails, at least I will cause them to deposit some of their DNA (blood) at the crime scene. *Also, you should purchase personal protection ammo - it is designed to do maximum damage upon impact with flesh, but it will not penetrate walls - thereby you avoid accidentally shooting someone in another room of your home or having a bullet go out of your home and into a neighbors home.

Sweetfeet Nice to hear from the ladies. Glad your self protected. The instructor gave out good advice on weapon selection based on the health of the carrier. At some time or other, the big bore shooters will have to downsize their weapon selection. I really hated to do it, but discression is the better part of valor. I truly do appreciate the reply. There was several ladies applying for the correct weapon for the new ccp when we bought ours. I smiled thinking who ever tries evil on these ladies will suffer dire consequences. I cheer em all.warmest regards LOU .

Great reply. You took my line"shaken-not stirred"
Pepper spray requires a non wimdy day as I recall. unless youre so close to be kissin' cousins. I figure the walther is better for me than taking it lying down.
Thanks Elmer
egards,
LOU

d beatty Thanks for the reply. Was wondering if your non government 380 was new and it wasn't cleaned before firing/ We will ,in all probability be doing the same thing. Ammo selection after cleaning the 380. Need it smooth and firing withou problems. Regards LOU.
