If one cell is bad that cell will be hot when charging. Do not spark around the battery. Never remove the clamps while charging at any rate. Blow across the top away from the terminal to clear hysdrogen when disconnecting the clamps. Sulfation is pretty much the decision point for a new batery. Jim

Batteries tend to give off hydrogen sulfide gas when charging.Gassing starts at 5 amps.Fast charging kills batteries.

It is normal for a lead acid battery to release hydrogen gas from its' electrolyte while charging. That is part of the chemical reaction and it can be explosive, the faster the charge the faster the release. Other things in the solution may be picked up by the gas and contribute to oder. Ventilation, no ignition sources or other explosive materials make for safer charging.

That smell is from gassing of the battery, and is normal during charging, more so if you are charging fast. It's also the primary gas in a fart.
