To all U.S. Marines on this forum, I say "HAPPY BIRTHDAY"!!
Since 'Nam came up on a thread yesterday, I gotta tell this.
A Marine Corps buddy of mine who stayed in for 20 years spent six of the toughest years of the Viet Nam War in Alameda, California as a station keeper for a Marine Reserve fighter squadron.
The day came when he fell out for an IG Inspection--a Master Gunnery Sergeant with four hash marks and wearing only the National Defense and Marine Corps Good Conduct ribbons.
The inspecting officer said, "This inspection DID include full ribbons, Sergeant".
Dick replied, "Yes Sir, I'm aware of that".
Dick told me he knew right then that the jig was up. Within 30 days he had orders to 'Nam.
