Winter Wheat Planting- One Pass Tillage/Planting?

Hey all,

I'm in the middle of planting winter wheat, and got to thinking about ways to save time. Right now I'm discing and cultivating to bust up the bean stalks and flatten out the field, then using a conventional 510 International 21 run drill. Does anybody use some sort of a coulter cart or minimum tillage device attached directly ahead of their drill to do tillage and plant all in one pass? If so, can you post up pictures and a description?

Basically I just need something to loosen up the ground a little and chop stalks to prevent trash build up, while preventing large dirt lumps.

Thanks!

We disced and then planted. We pulled a cultipacker behind the planter. We used heavy chains to beef up and stabilize the wheat drill's rear "step" and hitch. Used it for many years no problem. As for a one pass, I think I have seen that before but it was a big rig on a big farm.

When I was young (which wasn't all that long ago..) My grandpa and uncles had a Vibra-Shank that was 3 point mounted, and they built a hitch and pulled the 8300 JD drill behind with their 185 Allis.

I can't tell you HOW exactly he did it, as I know if you were to raise the 3 point, the back of the drill would drag in usual circumstances, but grandpa was/is pretty ingenious, so who knows how he rigged it up exactly.. I was too young to recall much other than "WOW.. that's neat.. wonder why they're doin it like that."

And NO, it wasn't a "track whacker" or the like, it was a actual field cultivator, to the best I can remember it was a IH Vibra-Shank.. The field cultivator was around there until about 8-9 years ago.. I almost bought it, but couldn't see where I'd need it.. Silly me.

we always pull the jd 8200 drill behind the ih 370 disk. just weld a drawbar on the disk and get you some extra long hydraulic hoses for the drill. added benefit: no tire tracks to drill through.
