Farmall M wont start

I have a 1951 farmall M and it will crank and ocassionaly fire but it wont stay running, it has gas and I took the carb apart and cleaned it. Sometimes after cranking exhaust gas comes out the air cleaner. A couple times it even backfired out the exhaust. Im clueless as what to do. After it fires a few times i can keep it running. Any help would be greatly apperciated! also the coil becomes very warm if the swithc is left on?

Is it something just happened out of no where or has something been done on it before it wouldn't run. It sounds like what happens when the spark plug wires are on wrong.

A bad distributor cap will do that. So will points not adjusted to .020" on the high point of the breaker cam. Plug wires are front to back 1234, with firing order 1342. The cap is "usually" set for:
2-1
4-3
Looking at the cap from the back. It turns CW. Jim

Just had similar on Continental F124: rotor had split down the side where it engages "flat" on distributor shaft and was "freewheeling" causing timing to vary considerably. New rotor and all is well. Hope your's is that easy (and cheap) to fix, good luck!

Sounds like you need to do some basic trouble shooting. #1 check for a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap. If you have that check your firing order to make sure it is correct. Also try starting it in the dark and if you see sparks any place that is where the problem could be. Pull the plugs and make sure they are not fouled out.

Could be a condenser take another condenser and touch the lead to the bolt on the dist and ground the cond. case to the dst housing and tyr to start it.
