Value of Ear Corn

My friend has a small wagon load of ear corn that wouldn't fit in his crib. Its a 100 bu. side dump with sides extentions and heaped up. He figures its about a 110 bu and would shell out to about 80bu according to him. I see corn closed at 6.54 today. I feed gound ear corn and could always use a little more. What would be a fair price for his load?

Boy, it's been awhile since I worked with ear corn, but 80 bushels sounds in the ballpark. If the corn has big fat cobs with shallow kernals, then 80 is too much. Is $6.54 the local cash price? Here in NW Iowa it's 6.30 at the local elevator. Jim

If you have any idea what the wagon weighs why not weigh it up and just divide by 70 instead of 56. That is what a bushel of ear corn weighs per bushel. That would be fair to everyone. Mike

I'd do it Mike's way - in fact that's what I did selling a load to a neighbor, he didn't know how to figure it, I said historically it is 70 lbs per bu for a dry load of corn, price it what it is on sale day. No one can feel slighted if it gets weighed up and done right.

Your numbers are right on the mark....for how many decades? Perfect example of what we were taught years ago.......ear corn vs shelled corn.

Yup, That's what I do. I weighed the empty wagons yesterday and our club is picking today. I plan to bring at least 3 loads home.

Sounds like weighing it would be the fair way divided by 70#. I had forgot that eared corn weighed 70# per bu. I call the local elevator and ask the paying price for corn that day and weigh it when buying shelled corn from another friend. He is happy, I get it for a fair price, and he has a little less corn he has to haul to the elevator. Thanks all for the advice.
