Key Fob Programming

Just picked up a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am SE that needs a keyless remote entry Transmitetr i.e. Key Fob (Clicker)

Of course Flea Bay has them cheap BUTTTTTTTTTTTT a quick Google search leads me to believe that car (unlike 2003 or older) cant be home programed like I did on many older cars and it takes a Scanner maybe even requires a GM dealer to do it grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Can anyone confirm or deny that for certain??

I found a ton of instructions for older cars and have done them myself, but am afraid the 2004 Grand Am requires at least a scanner tool

John i would say your only good answer would be from a dealer and then mite even need to go to another as this stuff changes so fast its hard to keep up no doubt some body at a dealer would know the answer and how many dollars it will take cause if you screw it up it mite never work.

Don"t know about GM, but Ford has instructions in the owner"s manual. Might check yours to see if it is there. I know it works for all late models.

I (Purdue Aero Engineering graduate, 1965!)tried to program a key for my 2008 Forester and it drove me nuts.
There was no apparent logic to how to do it and you had maybe 10 seconds to get every step (push button, turn key on and off, etc) just right in sequence. Any modern 12 yearold could probably do it blindfolded but I finally gave in and took it to the dealer.

Good Luck, John

Site below is the outfit where I purchased a couple of fobs for a "New to me" 2001 Suburban a month or so back. It was old enough that I could program my own. They indicate that you are going to need to visit a dealer or at least find somebody with a scan tool that can read/write the GM specific codes to do it.

YMMV,

Somewhere I have the instructions for home programming replacement fobs for our 2004 Blazer. Seems like there was some switch combination within the car which put it into program mode. Actually, the car learns to accept the fob... Keep looking, don"t go to a dealer until last resort - they"ll want $$$$.

I took my Blazer to the dealer and they got the book out. Had to hold the brake pedal down and turn the key off and on several times etc. Probably best to see your dealer. This new technology no one can keep up with any more so I don't even try...

any shop with a "Tech II " scanner should be able to program it . Got new update for my snap on Modis but have not tried programing FOBS yet , may work .

Our 05 Uplander has a remote for everything, locks, "trunk" side doors, etc. This remote is probably one of the worse ones ever built, as it goes out so much, we almost said the heck with it and just use the key to unlock the door. Dealer told us since we have extened GM warranty, and its a covered part, they will repalce the remote as long as we own it, so every 6 or 7 motnhs, we go in, they set the remote for the van, no scan tool at all. No its not the battery, the remote itself actually comes apart. Common for the model van/remote we have.
