44 special - stuck in 2nd gear

I have a 44 Special that is stuck in 2nd gear. Has anyone else had this problem? What is the easiest way to go about fixing it? The tractor has been used lately so it"s not rusted in place. Also not stuck in two gears at once since it can be driven in 2nd gear all day. The problem came on suddenly while in use. Haven"t had time to look at it yet. Figure the lever disengaged from the forks so I"m basically asking how the lever is held into forks. Thanks

LIFT THE RUBBER BOOT ON SHIFT LEVER, REMOVE SNAP RING,AND LEVER, USE LARGE SCREWDRIVER OR SOMETHING SIMILAR, ALIGN SHIFT RAILS . RE-ASSEMBLE , AND YOU ARE GOOD TO GO.

If the lever will move into other gears, it is the classic "stuck in two gears" problem.

If the lever is jammed also, you have a different problem that will probably require lifting the cover on the transmission.

If you can get the top cover off the tranny, it shouldn't take much to figure it out. Had the shifter out of the rails in my JD 720 D recently. The worst part of it was getting enough stuff off to get to the tranny cover.

I would remove the shift lever then jack up one wheel so as not to have a bind on the tranny then remove the shift lever then you can line up the shift rails.

Our 44 has done this a couple of times. I think the reason it did it is because there was a load on the tractor and someone tried to shift it to neutral without pushing the clutch in. We had to pull the top cover and put the shifting forks back into the shifting collars. If I remember right it was second gear both times on ours also.
