rich, need to pick yer brain on my 14t baler. tried baling some corn stalks last week. went less than desirable. kept breaking the twine after it tied the bale.(twine was knotted, did not cut properly and kind of doubled over, then snapped the twine that was already tied on the bale) noticed the wiper arms have some small wear areas where the twine has been riding. kind of like a shallow groove. the manual calls for them to be smooth and well rounded. can i weld a little on the wiper arms and smooth them out? mig or stick? i have new twine knives i am changing out this weekend. baler does fine in hay, no problems. also would you run the tension cranks looser or tighter of a setting than for hay? thanks...glenn

Well first off I have never baled corn stacks so may o may not be of help. As for the knots sounds like the twine knifes are dull since you get a knot but it is not cutting it off the bill hooks or the wiper arm is not set as close as it needs to be. As for the wear I would only polish if out with emery cloth those arms are made to be worked and bent some so any welding will make then hard which would make them break easy. Those wiper arms are also pretty easy to replace. As for how tight it will depend on how the bale feels. You need the bales tight enough so as the make the twine good and tight on the bale but not so tight as to not be able to lift the bales

Hey Glen,I've experienced what you're describing.the grooves can be 'cleaned up' with a round file-no welding nessary. If the clearance between the wiperarm and billhook is too much,a sharp rap with a hammer will fix that.Corn stalks are hard to bale-and hard on a baler. You will need to completely back off chamber tention, corn stalks still contain moisture and pack too tight, therefore breaking string as the bale is formed.the sting will not 'slide' between the end of the bale while in the chamber and breaks.Hope this helps.Steve

thanks for the replys, i will clean up the wiper arms and change the twine knives. i was running the tension cranks a little tighter than i run for hay, so i will back them way off and see what happens. thanks again, glenn

I do not know anything about a 14 T but i remember my dad on a McCormic Corn Binder which had a knoter as the 14 T The Old binder would get to missing bundles. He had a small fine rat tail file and would use it to work the grove out of the duck bill so it was smooth.
