Deer Whistle.....do they work??

Whats everyones opinion on Deer whisles? just curious. Our body shop gets deer hits in a lot with whistles. Just wondering if anyone thinks they work...???

I was wondering that myself. I plastered my first deer a couple of months ago. She did a lot of damage starting dead center when her head went through the grill, and her hooves wrapped around all the way to the door. I swerved to miss the first two, got the third. Good thing I was doing under the speed limit or would have been worse. The sheriff cars around me all have a pair on the front bumpers. Do they work? I would like to know as well. Even more so, hope so. I don't want to hit another deer.

The reason i ask is i just put a transmission in an 1995 pontiac for a buddy and he kept the donor car the used trans came from for sheet metal, becasuse he said its not if he hits a deer but when. He drives 13 miles of gravel to get to the hwy. I only have 5 miles. Maybe its worth a shot??? I work at a dealership that gets deer hits everyday this time of year. I will have to pay attention if they have whistles or not. Couldn't hurt to put a set on. Cheaper than a case of beer and you know how far that goes.

I was out of town last week when it happened, but a minivan headed eastbound on the interstate a baseballs throw from my place hit a deer and stopped on the interstate as I understand it. It then got rear ended by a truck and seven out of ten people in the minivan were killed. I also understand that they were on their way to a family funeral in NY of all things. Talk about bad luck.

Maybe a set of deer whistles would have prevented it. But then again, once a deer gets between the fences and lanes on an interstate, no good can come of that. I take state roads and not insterstates whenever possible.

Aftermath of a deer strike on the interstate

deer whistles on a '92 s-15 jimmy 107,000 miles, never hit a deer. no deer whistles on a 92 jeep cherokee, killed 3 deer in 80,000 miles (good grill guard, no damage). Your milage may vary.

WOW. thats not good. I deer hunt in all forms. I always take doe. I let the wall hangers go for my brothers and dad. I just hunt for meat, not horns. Nebraska is trying to get rid of the huge number of deer population. Until its legal for me to drop 5-10 does every evening, it won't happen. There are heards of 20-50 here. its crazy. you don't need a scope. its like fish in a barrel.

worth a try then i d say. couldn't hurt. I m gunna get my buddy a pair. My trucks have lound pipes. like bikes, saves lives.

We had them on our work trucks - I don't think they're worth a nickle, unless you just happen to like the looks of them. They day I put mine on, I was coming home from work after dark and a big buck stepped out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and throwed my lunch bucket, thermos, coveralls, heavy coat, etc up against the dash. Missed the deer, picked everything up out of the floor, drove another quarter mile and another big buck stepped out in front of me. A repeat of deer #1, except I just left everything in the floor 'til I got home.

Sometimes, those deer callers DO work!

A couple of years ago, my renter and his wife left his Dad's farm to go home in town. She told him to go first in the pickup (no deer callers on the bumper) to scare any deer out of the way and followed in her car WITH deer callers on the bumper. They apparently work, 'cuz a deer he didn't even SEE was called out in front of her and totaled the car!

Then, she give him 'ell for going first and scaring the deer into her path!

Didn't do me any good on my GMC pickup several years ago. $750.00 in damage from a small Doe. Dogs always seemed to notice the whistle.

I think they work. I run 200 miles each way between two ranches, I run at night. A lot of it is through deer country. I never hit deer. A lot of it is knowing where they might be and slow down. They just stand there and watch me go by. The trouble with the things is they come off easy. I need to get more, both are gone on my wife's car and only one left on my truck. The last time I looked NAPA wanted $20 a pair. Autozone never heard of them. I am going to try Carquest, I heard thery had a deal on them.

need to be going 35 mph for them to work. They work fine until everybody uses them, then the deer pay no more attention to'em than ordinary noises, cuz they are then ordinary noises.

I seriously doubt those whistles do anything. I've driven around a million miles, much of it in heavily wooded country full of deer, and I've never even come close to hitting a deer. No whistles on my vehicles, just lucky (so far).

In my opinion there's very little you can do to scare deer out of your way, any more than you can scare squirrels out of the way. An automobile traveling at 70 mph might as well be invisible, as far as wildlife is concerned. It just doesn't register in the consciousness of most animals, because they're much more concerned with what's happening within a few yards of them. An approaching car isn't registered as a threat, no matter how much noise it's making.

I watched one of those news programs years ago that did a test on them. Can't remember which one now. Their conclusions were they couldn't prove that they worked so they contacted the company that makes them and their response was they didn't prove they don't work either. I think you got to draw your own conclusions on them. My guess would be they work perfect for seperating your money from your wallet.

Loud pipes didn't work for two Harley riders I know. Both of them had their bikes totalled in separate collisions with deer last summer.

An old friend owns a body shop. He's got a box full of deer whistles he's taken off cars/trucks that have passed through his shop while being repaired after hitting deer.

They work in one aspect. They're great money makers for the people who sell 'em.

I think that they are designed to take yer money. We have a very high deer population and in 40 years of driving I've hit one deer (while stationed in Germany in the 80's near Baumholder). At night I drive the speed limit and watch the ditches. If I see an eye reflecting back at me I slow down. Never blow the horn at them cause it scares em and then you don't know what they are going to do.

I've got a BIL who hit 4-5 deer a year when he still had his old beater....sense he got rid of that and started driving newer cars he has hit only one.

What part of NE are you in? We hunted out of Bristow, NE. The problem for us is how do you donate a deer. Here in Pa we can take them in and make a donation at a packers, no charge. In NE I asked the guy at Brauns in Atkinson about a donation and he said if I pay for it , he would take it? He is pretty pricy I thought.

I read a study that said the Deer whistels don't work.

A while back,(around year 2000) the Wisconsin
State Highway Patrol installed "Deer whistles"
on 30 patrol cars, used on Interstate"s 90 and
94, and had them on for 6 months or more.
The results were "inconclusive"

I guess I stand alone as I do believe that they do work based on some information I have heard.

My brother worked as a Wildlife and Parks officer for about 45 years and used to have to pickup hit deer from the roadways. One high mileage driver in his area had a very high annual deer/vehicle hit rate until he finally installed deer whistle devices on his company pickup. His hit rate fell by about 80% annually. That is good enough stats for me to spend $10.

My brother explained how the whistles work from what he had been told. The deer aren't scared away, the whistle sound causes them to freeze movement as they try to pinpoint the sound.

I have seen many deer do just that as I approach, they lift their head and halt movement.

Feel free to call me a sucker for buying them if you wish, but for $10 I do believe they provide at least some degree of help and so far I've never hit a deer. I've formed my opinion and am sticking to it.

I might add that it is said to be unwise to honk your horn at deer. They can't always tell where the sound is coming from and can act irrationally. Instead, flash your headlights at them and they immediately recognize where the danger is and act accordingly.

If the state would just put up a few more "deer crossing" signs so that the little fellers would know where they are supposed to cross the hiway. :>)

I have two vehicles with Cabela's 12v deer whistles hooked up to turn on with the headlights. They don't depend on airflow. In about 10 years, I haven't hit a deer with either of them.

Deer always lift their heads and look at us 100-300 yards away, so it does get their attention, but what happens next depends
entirely on the deer. The Cabela's instructions recommend using your horn to scare them away. It works, horns put them in motion, but not always in the direction you hope for.

If our animal science classes were correct about genetic selection, why do we still have so many
deer that choose to run out in front of motor vehicles?

Same results we had when I worked at a dearlership with a bodyshop. We saw alot of whistles get hit.

They need to move the "deer crossing" signs around here to a safer location for the deer. Too many are getting hit. :>)

I used to ride a motorcycle.

I could not ride the five miles to town at dusk without getting at least a couple bugs in my teeth.

I suspect the whistles take bug strikes just like my teeth did.

I have yet to see anyone cleaning their deer whistles with a toothbrush.

Easiest thing to do is paint your vehicle super bright "Hunters Orange". Sure works for me when I am out in the woods looking like a giant orange marshmallow. Deer seem to be leary of orange blobs running around the woods.

And... since every vehicle I have the deer seem to be attracted to is not hunters orange color, I think you should try it!!!

Seriously, I have no idea, I drive a little slower at night and look for glowing eyes. At one time I had hit more deer than I had shot hunting, but I finally have those numbers turned around.

I have good luck in a loud chevy pick up deer hunting, or just off the combine platform...being quiet in a tree or behind a hay bale and they know somethings up....
