where your brand loyalty came from?

Lots of good topics and people on this board. Just wondering as to how you started liking the brand you do now? I assume its what most people grew up with.

Personally, I grew up on mainly JD's but became a fan of the "other green" after working on my cousins farm where they had a 1655, and an 1855. Also another cousin of mine collects olivers so I quickly became partial to them.

I have no idea, I was raised on JDs and a TO20 now I have 4 IHs a 8-N, a Case, and a MF but there is 6 JD lawn & garden tractors here.

sounds like you like a little bit of everything. I also like the deere's, IH's, whites, masseys and a couple of the molines, and fords.

All depends on what I am doing. I have lets see . A/C Farmall, Ford, MH MM Oliver, JD, and I bet I am missing a couple. Each has its place and each has its down falls.

I really am not sure, I got into AC's by accident in 98, with the purchase of a 52 B, that was froze up. In 2000 I bought the place where I now live, and used the B with an aftermarket 3 pt, to level stump holes, build a driveway, dig post holes, pull 4" and smaller honey locust trees, plow a large garden in sod soil, and remove a 10 yd pile of dirt, left over from the instaliation of a mobile home. only had a 1 bottom plow, a log chain, a back blade, a post hole digger,a back slip scoop, and a 3pt disc that was too heavy. I quickly relearned to steer with my brakes. I learned RESPECT for the B and then bought it some help with a 55 WD45. I also caught the bug, and now have MM,IH,and Oliver.

Well, my dad used to have a 2010 that he liked quite a bit, but sold when I was little to help pay the bills because he was not farming, but I think most of my affection for Deere green came when I was 18 and moved away from home and went to work for a large hay farmer (for up here at least) who is quite fond of John Deere. Running his 4020, 4240, and 4450 was where I really learned what I liked, and is why I now have a 430, 4010, and 4020. He never did let anybody run his G, but I still want one. He had other makes as well, a couple of newer cases, a `60s Massey, a ford versatile 9030, and a New Holland, and the pride of the fleet, a Steiger for tillage. Gotta say I am a little bit like him in that I like all tractors, and will own other brands over the years, but I just have a fondness for the New Generation and older deeres.

I bought my first tractor in 1983 at 15 years old. It was a Farmall M S/N 99090. Unfortunately I sold it but if anyone has any leads I will probably pay more than it is worth. Anyhow, Enjoyed tractor pulling and the thresheree's. Didn't mind any other brands friends had a bit of everything. Then a "new" president got ito the club andall but defiled everything that didn't match his green and yellow. In fact he even told the club that you will NEVER see more than the green and yellow regardless what was the feature. I don't necessarily dispise the green and yellow but this guyruined that brand for me. I currently have 15 or so IHC and love hanging out in the shop working on them and even more being with my friends at the shows. My best friend is into the AC and sometime I will have a green Allis in my collection. Funny thing as looking back thru family photos and other than a JD D and AC WD-45 everything in there is IHC. We have had everything from a Titan 10-20 to 15-30, F-12, O-4, W-400, and 1566.

My family used horses until the 1950's. First tractor was an AC WC, second was an AC WD, next was Farmall reg, then Farmall F-20, Farmall Cub 1955(53 model, 2 years old on the lot) after that, AC 190, serial number 194. 194th one built. After that, my dad started working for Ford dealership. So next new was a 1975 Ford 7000 row crop. No new tractor since then, but he worked for Ford/New Holland until 2008. So, we are a Ford family now, but, I worked for FNH sicne 1994, then quit... but still, we are loyal now to Ford, New Holland, Allis Chalmers, Farmall... loyal only to what we know, because, what we know has served us well. so SO SOOOOOO scared of buying a new one, because of horror stories... dang you can't win.

Well dad had all Olivers except for a little Ford 8N which he ,in good weather used much like a pick up truck, and when I got into farming my tractor collection includeed at different times,a CC Case,A DC Case,A SC Case and a VAC Case. Also at different times I had an IHC F20,an MM R ,an Oliver 88 and maybe some others that I am forgetting about. These were all Farm sale purchases and not all were on the farm at the same time. My future BIL who worked for an AC Dealer got me into AC Tractors and Machinery to the point where all I had were AC Tractors. As my Acreage increased I gradually bought higher Horse Power to the point that when I sold out I was running 3 WD45"s, 1 D17,1 190XT and 1 D21.

My grandfather had a Ford N, my uncle had a Farmall M and a Massey 44. I about grew up on that Farmall M.

No experience whatsoever with JD's until I was in my mid-20's. My own first tractor was a JD MT (didn't like it and sold it), got a JD B, sold it, got a Farmall Super C (my forever tractor) and now have three Farmalls, five JD's, two Fords and one Allis. So--I don't know how that plays out when discussing brand loyalty. I like them all.

But--the Farmall M was the "biggie" during my formative years and still holds a special place in my heart. But-now, after experiencing other brands, I do have to say that I think that a John Deere A is a special machine.

My brand preference is IH, I grew up on the old 30 series Case tractors and liked them. I've only had 1 JD, a 4020, and was very unimpressed, my newer tractors are NH.

We had Allis-Chalmers and John Deere as I grew up, but most of the rest of the uncles and cousins were Farmall guys. I'm still partial to the two cylinders, but am priviledged to own two of the old family tractors, a 1942 Farmall H & a 1948 Allis-Chalmers B.

I only remember ACs on my grandpas farm! Dad tells of other brands, but I never saw them! Dad worked as a mechanic at the AC dealer in Plymouth Nebraska for a while as well, so AC stories abound! We brought grandpas WD with trip bucket loader into town after he went to heaven. Want to restore it some day! It works great-just needs all new sheet metal, 2 rear rims, and paint!

Ollie. To answer your question..Several year ago, when KUBOTA began to get started in the US they spent quite a bit of money to survey the market and your question was really the essence of the study and they even carried it a little farther asking people what it would take to change brands. They found that as you stated most people growed into brand loyalty, what you have is what you like.. As for the answer to what it would take to change people lots of answers like provide value, help me get my work done easier ect. They must have figured out something because not many people grew up with kubotas and now there a lot of them out there.

Yes, I grew up around the Olivers but the first tractor I ever drove was our Massey-Harris 50?? (smaller utility tractor) and spent many hours learning to drive on that tractor.
Then we had one of the last MM U302 as I have never seen another one like it with the flat top fenders. I wish I knew where it went.
Next came the Olivers, at one time or another we had/have a 1550,1650,1750,1850 the only bad one of the group was the 1750. We also had a SAME tractor.
My next experience came in high school when I worked at a JD dealer. What little respect I had for JD tractors was gone after having to work with and on them for 10 months at that dealer.
Today I farm with the 1650,1850, and a couple years ago I purchased a White 6105.

I like them all, but grew up on IH, and have "red in the shed". Each has its own place, for one reason or anther. Two are family owned tractors, one was the last one my Dad and I worked on together, one was my first, 2 are my kids tractors. One does the work around here.

These will probably be all I ever own, as my body wont let me do the thing I use to do, but both of the tractors my gramps had when I was growing up are coming to me soon, Im both happy and sad at the same time about it, the guy who bought them has willed them to me, and I understand hes not doing good, and 2 more other family members are leaving to me, so there kids wont send them to China. Im not so sure they all will get restored, but theyll betaken care of for sure.

I grew up in the middle of 5 farms in MD. Three had farmalls, one had farmalls and Massey's and the other had John deere and farmalls. One farmer down the road had Olivers. As a kid I would ride the Farmall M in one field and the Oliver Super 88 would be beside us in the other field. The M always went away from the Super 88 when we were plowing. It wasn't until I got into tractors and pulling that I relized the M had been to the dealer and the 88 hadn't. I don't know what he did to the M but it wasn't stock. The farm that had the Oliver switched to Deere's and said to him the deere's are better. His response was his barn burnt down and they were tight on money and Oliver wouldn't extend credit and John Deere did and that's why he went to deere and his comment was deere sucked but he couldn't get money to buy Olivers. I have IH, Oliver, Ac and One JD. I like the IH's and the Oliver the best Allis is ok and I just don't like the JDs. I never would have farmed with them back then if I was a farmer.

My Dad always thought IH made the best tractors although he bought what he could afford. I guess I'm carrying on with his way of thinking. If I had the money to buy what ever and when ever I might pick up on of the old 2 cylinder JD's as I love the sounds of those things working. Its not easy to find the money to do what I want with what I already have so I don't see another color in my future.

I would have to say an IH/Ford vehicle dealership in my family might have something to do with my penchant for all things IHC. It's also the equipment I grew up around on my Grandpa's farm. Not the same for Fords. I am a life-long fan of Henry's all-American A's because they've been my favorite car, since my first car show. Couldn't tell you why, but I've been a Ford man, ever since.

i grew up working on neighboring farms drove everything except whites grandad had fords he really liked the deeres but couldnt afford them first tractor i ever drove was a dc case loved that tractor at 16 i inherited a jd b so i was stuck on 2 cylinders then i bought a dc case of my own and i absolutely hate it i have 3 2 cyl. and everytime i try driving something else i just have to go back to my ol deeres ive seen 2 different tractors of the same make and model one is always better than the other some people get on a certain make of tractor and get a bad impression and think there all the same which is not true but its hard to change a persons opinion i personally dislike the ih ive driven several and wasnt impressed with any of them

I have two loyalties...Oliver and IH and they toot much depper into previous generations in my family. My Grandpa started farming in 1942 and purchased a John Deere B. My great-Grandpa had an A and they were a John Deere family. The B proved to small, so Grandpa wanted to buy an A. It was during the war and you had to get your name on a list. Well, the dealer called and told my Grandpa that he was next up and a new A had arrived. Well, we he arrived he was told he could not have the A as there had been a mix up. My Grandpa believed another farmer had made the deal more "worthwhile" for the JD dealer. So, he walked out and stopped by the Oliver dealer and purchased a new 70. Great Grandpa traded the A for a new MH 44 and that ended the John Deere loyalty. We have always been partial to Oliver and still are to this day.
IH came in when my Dad went to work for an IH dealer and the red tractors soon replaced the Olivers. I cannot remembera time when we did not have IH or Oliver equipment on the farm and today both IH and Oliver are gone though IH still lives on with Case IH but it is not the same.

I grew up and have farmed with a lot of different colors(IH, Massey Ferguson, Deutz, Ford/New Holland, Kubota, Yanmar, John Deere). I always like to try something different and have had many different makes and models over the years. To me, what stands out is the dependability of each brand that forms a brand loyalty. Parts availability and service are a factor too. I have seen people swear by a certain brand, but never have owned anything else. Personally, I like to try different models and decide for myself which I think is best.

a farmall M shouldnt be outpulling a super 88 diesel. the horsepower isnt even close. I would say the Oliver owner was plowing down a gear and taking his time and the Farmall M owner was pulling one less bottom and had his turned up.

An Oliver Super 88 is 56 horsepower stock and a Farmall M is 36.

I like my Farmall H because they are cheap and plentiful and it can do a lot of work. Seems like to get a tractor that useful from another brand tends to cost more around here. I am a cheapskate, and always will be, probably.

I suppose this topic is about what you grew up with, because all of the post so far refer to the younger days. I would have to say I am loyal to what I could afford because thats what dad did and I have tried them all at one time or another. But, I will say that in my 40 something years of farming and collecting, I have had much better luck with case, ih ,ac and massey than any other brand. I've had a few deeres that everybody is so proud of and I must say I wasn't impressed to say the least. I've bought 70 series cases that were left for dead and done a little patching on them and put them in the feild and made a crop with them bunches of times. Same results with ih and ac. I have always been lucky to be able to see life left in all brands and been able to fix them. I have a few olivers in my shed, but there was no dealers in our area so I never used them, but I can see their advantages and love to hear those 6 cylinder engines hum.

Another thing to consider when looking at brand loyalty, at least with my dad and I it is the case, but a lot of people keep the same color tractor around because they know them mechanically, and there is more spare parts interchange between similar models. Even going from a dubuque Deere to a Waterloo built model is like changing brands of tractors, they are all engineered differently. That is one reason we are planning on staying with mostly new gen. deeres as we purchase more equipment. We know the deeres, and a lot of there little tricks.

That being said, I can`t say I have ever been disappointed with any make of tractors, and will not bash any of the old american iron. My neighbor uses a very nice IH 826 and it does not do anything any better or worse than our deeres. Good friends of mine only own Olivers, I can`t say a bad thing about them.

Olliekid, If you had read my response you would have read that now I know that the M was worked on. It doesn't take much work to get an M to 50-60 horsepower. And yes they both had 3bottom plows and the M walked away form the S88. Road that M all day and for many years. I've seen stock M's at shows and pulls and you can tell the ones that have been worked on. Also I would call the farmer with the M a better more up todate farmer and I think he probably had the plow adjusted better. If those aren't adjusted correctly they will pull harder, so that might be some of it, but I think a lot of it was he had the M worked on.

I started on Dad's Fer TO20, so have my own. He bought a JD 2440 so my big tractors are JD's (2010,4010, 4020) I have an IH 300U and really do not like it. It is just a night mare to work on. My father-in-law had a Farmall Cub, and I did not like that either.

My father for sure. He had a JD 4020, 4050, 4055, 4250 and 4450 through the years. I got the chance to run them all and I think these are some of the best JD tractors ever built.

even at 60 horsepower a 60 horsepower tractor doesnt walk away from a 56 horsepower tractor tho. do you see my point? plus a super 88 would have more weight unless lots was added to the M.

not discarding your story just saying there are some factors that are more important that the M having more power than the super 88 such as plow settings, how hard each was running the tractor etc.

No brand loyalty here. Just like people, there's good and bad ones in all colors. Have Case, Farmall, Allis Chalmers, John Deere, and Ford tractors. Cars and trucks the same. I have Chevys, Fords, and Dodges in the driveway. I do believe in buying American though!

Thats a tough one. Looking at it backwards, I love my NH dealer. They arent close but they do a good job reasonable. I dont particularly care for either my Deere or Case dealers and the Cat/Agco dealer hasnt figured out pricing yet.

I've always loved Case DB tractors but once again NH wins out. My dad usually had Fords. His first diesel was a Case DB in 1976. I kept my brand loyalty up until I had to put a water pump on a 1210 in the field. Took 3 tries, water pump was over 100 bucks, and you had to put in all back to check it for leaks. I changed a water pump on my dads 5600 Ford the same week. 50 bucks, took an hour, and didnt even have to pull the fan shroud. Later on he and I decided to get tractors alike so we would have an inventory of used parts for after hours use. Thats how I ended up with 6 of them.

I have no real brand loyalty...I learned to drive tractors on Dad"s original JD MT, then his JD B. I worked my cousin"s farm where they still used a JD B for raking occasionally, and 4020s then 4430s for the real work (newer models as the time changed, but I had moved on by then), so my first love tractor wise was JD, since I have started collecting, restoring, pulling (strictly stock pulling) I have pretty much learned to love them all, and my loyalty lies with what I am doing with them: replacing a clutch? JD 2cly, a radiator? IH...pulling? IH, plowing? Ford or JD.
About the only ones I have found that I don"t love, and I am speaking strictly from a comfortability stand point is a MM R and an AC WD 45, I know they were good tractors, but just something about sitting on a tractor with your feet hanging at different levels, then ya throw in a pan seat to boot...not real comfy on the fat azz...we never sell tractors, ever! ...but those got sold!

My pap had a Farmall H. He use to take me on rides all the time. I loved that tractor. Finally got one about 2 years ago. unfortunately he isn't around to help me work on it but i know he is watching over me all the time. Any way he sold his H and bought a 9N. So I love all Farmalls and my 9N.

Farmalls, Potato fields of Northern Maine. Massey Harris was second most popular.Nothing green in the area that I knew of. No dealers I guess.

Dad worked as a mechanic for the MF dealer around the corner. Dad would take me to work with him on saturdays when I was real young, I'd sit in the break room watching "MF Television" videos or climbing checking out the tractors on the lot.
My grandfather and my uncle (who currently owns the farm) farmed/farm with MF tractors since the late sixties.

I like them all. We had MF, JD, IH, Ford but no Case or Olivers because there was no dealer close by. Right in town, less that 2 miles apart were IH, Ford, MF, AC dealerships. The JD shop was only a few miles down the road, however, we never had JD until the new generation came out. Farmed 180 acre of our own and 400 rented with the Farmall M doing the heavy work until the JD 4020 came along. First combine was a JD bought in the late 60's. Up until then we hired it out. Farm was a victim of the early 80's. We had moved off the place in the late 60's with a relative taking over. He was a hard worker but got in too deep with Production Credit's high interest rates.
