Tractor and Auger

I want to upgrade my auger. I have an old 8"X60' bottom drive. I would like one with a swing hopper and a lift system to raise it with. Found a Feteral 8X60 on craigslist in my price range. Called the owner and he said it has an orbit motor that you put on the winch to raise and lower and then use the orbit motor to drive the swing out hopper. Can I use my JD 70 or Oliver 88 to run this auger? Not sure about using the orbit motor with older tractor hydraulics. Any thoughts or experiences with this set up? Thanks, Chris

Chris,I don't know what you mean on the orbit motor driving the swingaway, too move the swingaway or drive the swing auger itself. To drive the swing auger itself probily not(not enough press.or GPM),but otherwise you are fine.

Sounds like a nice set-up. Is it anywhere near close enough to try one of your tractors on? I run my new 10x62 with a WD45 easily, but the old AC hydraulics are almost worthless on an orbit motor.
Just raising the auger and running the short hopper auger wouldn't take much power- so there's a possibility you could change the orbit motor to match the flow capabilities of your tractor.

Do not,I repeat do not buy one with hydraulic orbital motor drive on the swing hopper.

I had one that I used for about 5000 bushel and got rid of the dam thing.

My 1086 was about the only tractor that would keep the auger spinning. With the 560 it would slow under load and if you were not right there to slow the feed from the wagon the next thing you knew it was stopped.

All tractors new or used the flow and pressure goes down as the oil warms. So by the time you ran it for 10 minutes to unload a load you had to constantly slow the flow from the wagon before you got the wagon empty.

Also most gear drive augers you run the tractor at a meduim idle to run an auger. With the hydraulic drive you had to keep the engine on small tractors wrapped pretty high to run it.

I'm telling you unless you run it with a newer or bigger tractor you will be disappointed.

Gary

In my experience of the hydraulic motors I've run over the years with various tractors and trucks the only ones where I noticed a significant change as oil warmed was on the blower unit on an air pressure (White) or vacuum (JD) planter.
I used to run a 7"x15' roof auger hydraulically putting in wet corn. I used the same motor we had run the 40' elevator with when we put up ear corn.
I currently run my fertilizer wagon auger with a WD45, which barely runs it fast enough at wide open throttle, but the speed never changes.
Likewise I occasionally use the same wagon as back up at harvest with a Magnum, and of course that really spins the auger, but, again, the speed is constant.
So, I'm puzzled by your experience.

Maybe I was trying to run the auger to full.

But if your not gonna run it full, why have a 10 inch auger to begin with.

Replaced the auger with a gear drive swing hopper and it works great with the 560.

The hydraulic drive auger was used when I bought it but the fliting was in good shape. If the motor was wore out that far before the fliting, that's another reason not to own one.

Sounds like you were at least the second owner of a bad unit.
When I flipped the gearbox around on one of my transport augers this fall I discovered(and repaired) a worn slip joint.
BUT, I also discovered a loose output shaft! So, there's no winning at this game I guess.

I agree with Gary. My neighbor had an auger with a hydraulic drive hopper and his 4020's hydraulics struggled with it. The 1086 didn't do much better. Your 70 or 88 wouldn't have a ghost of a chance especially after the oil got good and hot, and it will. Jim

I'am with Gary on this one, that Hyd.drive was the biggest joke made.Local people that had them never kept them over 1 to 2 yrs, most of them were burnt(failed)up the first yr.You people running these 10x60+with 40-45HP must be running awful flat or dry grain because at times they will make a 90-100HP tractor talk to you.

Running a fertilizer auger for a few minutes to fill up the hoppers on a planter is a lot different from running a swing auger for hours on end unloading entire wagons of grain.

You fill the hoppers, shut down, and go planting for 30 minutes or more. The oil never has a chance to warm up, so it's not really much of a comparison.
