Have one of those hard starting 4230's. My neighbor says to put one 12 volt battery and one six volt in series like original two sixes . You then get 18 volts. He claims he has done this for years on several 4430's and has no issues other than really fast spin on engine and bright lights. He also claims they stay charged correctly from the alternator. Can anyone tell me if they have done this and or what you all think.

To fully charge a 12 Volt and a 6 Volt battery in series, the alternator would have to put out about 22.5 Volts. A stock 12 Volt alternator puts out about 2/3 that much voltage. Would you expect to get exceptional cranking power out of batteries that are only 2/3 charged?

You neighbour is into treating the symptoms rather than repairing the cause.
Install a hydraulic pump de-stroker, a whole screaming $15.00.
It's winter so use a winter block heater. I have no idea why some people refuse to plug the tractor in. So it will start like summer. Without grinding the batteries and starter down. And hammering the engine with ether.
Measure the actual voltage at the starter when cranking. Not that you or anybody else will. I've asked this question dozens of times over the past 10yrs. Nobody has bothered to test yet.
Odds are there are failing cables and high resistance connections. Bright and shinny doesn't always mean good contact either.
Battery cables from Walmart are only good for boats and lawn tractors.
There is a Delco 44MT starter that will wail that engine over with rpms you have never seen before.
Two of the highest CCA 6V batteries in series is my personal favorite.
Bolt the "ground" onto a starter mounting bolt.

4430's and 4230's are both hard starters. My 4430 started hard, changed it to two 12 volt batteries and it starts better now. That may not be your whole problem though. If you have many hours you may need to rework the starter. This may be the problem no matter how many batteries you put on it. How many hours? Maybe need to clean injectors or have the pump rebuilt. They seem to start harder if the fuel has been turned up. A lot of things here to look at but it is not always the bateries. Have you done a load test on them? If they test good I would look at the starter. My 4430 has 8900 hours on it starter has been off at least twice, but the engine is still original uses no oil and runs great. Like previous post you have to have good cables, they can look good but if they are original they can be bad inside the covering. Good luck.

two 1000 amp 12 volt batteries run both pos cables (not small ones) yo yhe battery post of starter and both neg cables (not small Oones) to one of the mounting bolts of starter and get a gear reduction nippendenso starter and that thing will spin at least 75 rpms faster and start a much colder temp un assisted.Mine has 23000 hours on original engine.I used 00 battery cables on mine
