I think I asked this before...I am building a 'hotrod' F-12.Useing a 2.8Ford.Is there a way to use the electronic ignition system without useing the computer?Or can I simply put a point system distributer in it?is there one that will fit/work?302;289...?I dont want to set the engine till I get that part figured out...Thanks,Steve

I don't know much about this, but we had a 2.8 v6 in a bronco II I believe it was a 84, It was a solid lifter engine so was a little noisy. I know it had a stand alone electronic Ign. It had the Ford box on the fender well. Then we got a Ranger with a 2.9 V6 in 86 Its ign had the ign module on the dist. You could turn that dist, and the computer would set the timing where it wanted to. Unless you turned it to far and it couldn't. I understood that the 4.0 came from this engine 2.9, just had a longer stroke. The 4.0 came in Explorer's made millions of them. Somebody like Summit will have a stand alone dist. Vic

the same motor -2.8- was used in the mid 70's in mustang 2 and pinto's, maybe you could find one of them with a point distrbuter.

which ignition system does it have? if it has the TFI=little box on the side of the dist. then i would get rid of the box on the dist and just use the pick up assy in it, then get a MSD ignition and use that, much more reialble and runs better with the mulit strike ignition.

The all aluminum 5.3 from pickups is popular. Light weight too.
With a cam plus headers they make 400+HP from a 327. There are wiring kits to make it a drop in swap.

you can find the duraspark distributor at most any salvage yard or e-bay, the brain box that bolts to the fender is cheap at napa. If you need a 2.8 I've got one thats completly rebuilt.

I would question using a 2.8 ,even if it was free ! 2.9 is a big step up . 5.0 even bigger . I'll see if I can draw you out wiring diagram tonight .

The little V6 was free.and its 'proportionatly' the right size.I'm not looking for a powerhouse puller, just something to show, have fun with.I have a Hiesler overdrive so it will be fun for tractor rides.

I was thinking along the same line as Cole below.

Find a Duraspark box, distributor, and a coil. Then you are ready to go. They "should" be available all over the junk yards.

You can convert that style distributor to run with a MSD or Mallory box if you are so inclined.

Hide the box on the frame rail, just a few wires to the distributor and you're all set.

Those 2.8's are good little engines. I had an 1984 Ranger 4x4 regular cab/longbox 4 sp. with one. It was carbuerated with a solid lifter cam. I could turn it 6500 RPM. I cut the exhaust off and made it true duals out the manifolds and used 2 SC case tractor mufflers. It sounded great and would get 28.5 mpg on the interstate. I sure do miss that truck but I now have a 1992 S-10 4x4 reg. cab short box with a 4.3 and 5 sp. and love it to.

Yep,Tractor mufflers sound great!I have a '68 Chev.C50(327 engine)grain truck with dual 'M' Farmall mufflers.Awsome.
