Is it me, or are the headlights on cars today dimmer than the old sealed beam ones? I have a fairly new truck, but I really like the round pencil beam headlights on my '76 F150. Plus the high/low beam floor switch was cool.

I don't know that they are dimmer, but they certainly seem to produce a whole lot more glare than the old sealed beams, and if there is even the slightest hint of moisture in the air, forget using the high beams.

I think it is we that are dimming out. When I was 20 I could see and read tiny print with a 20 watt bulb. now at 62 I need a 60 watt bulb to do the same with reading glasses. Our family Subaru has driving lights mounted low under the front bumper stock. Between those and Maximum brightness Halogen bulbs, I can again see where I am going. Flair from the beginnings of Cataracts are caused by scattering light in the cornea, or lens, or both. My wife just got a lense replacement in one eye. Very easy surgery and great recovery. Her comments "I do not remember ever having this brightness to colors and reduced fatigue driving at night". Jim

I prefer sealed halogen lights. These headlights with replacable bulbs are stupid. 94 Safari had the best brights of any vehicle I've driven. New cars are alright for a few years but then you basically gotta replace them to get any quality out of them. Pisses me off that I can replace high and low beams in the Safari for $10 and have good lights. The 1997 Sierra is $10 per bulb and it makes no dang difference.

its those dog-gone plastic headlight lenses getting fogged/ crazed over. The bulbs are brighter, but unless you buff those lenses you can't see a thing!

The biggest boon to the industry was when they got rid of the floor switches.

Around here, they'd rust out after 2-3 years of getting into the car with your snow and salt covered boots...
