Finished corn last friday

Took a bit longer to get it done than I would have liked, but I chopped the last of our corn on Friday. On about 30 acres, we got 2 8' x 150' bags, plus another 12 loads in the silos (one only took 3) and we fed a few loads up while chopping over the last few weeks too. 47 loads total. Some years we don't even get 1 load/acre and this year we got over 2-1 in some fields.

Here's a picture of the bag side of the bagger-

First load going in. Started with our 285 on the bagger as we didn't have a bigger one lined up yet, but we later got ahold of our neighbor's White 100 to run the bagger and then Dad pulled the wagons with the 285.

Did a lot of night time chopping after work and just later on at night on the weekends to get it done. During the weekday I'd fill the 4 wagons when I could after work and then Dad would empty them the next day. This year we couldn't get more than 11 loads chopped in one day because we had constant interuptions, ranging from minor break downs to weddings where we just couldn't be out there when we wanted to. On better planned years we've been able to knock it all out, including 4th crop alfalfa, in 3 days.

Most of our corn was taller than the canopy on the tractor, and some was even taller than the wagons. Was easy to loose sight of me this year. Where the wind knocked it down made for some difficulty chopping, but still happy with how it went.

how much horse power does it take to run a bagger?? must be less than it takes to run a chopper? nice pics

It takes alot of power to run a bagger. We run our very healthy:) 886 on the bagger and can snuff it very easly. But you have to watch that you don't over strech the bag by running to much pressure. You will blow the side out of them. I love choppin corn, most favorit time of year.

I had a similar harvest - just too much 'stuff' and breakdowns for my taste, finally got done this morning. Now for lots of rillage....

Can't imagine making silage any more, we had a frost in September, and been down to 25 a couple other nights along the way now. Only grass & alfalfa is green any more, and with no rain since July, they aren't very green! Corn was coming off the field at 13.5% here at the end, 15% at the beginning.

Feels good to get it done, doesn't it? :)

Depends on your definition of HP. It'll make a 100 HP tractor feel it's oats. We typically rent an IH 986 from a company across the road from us, but this year we weren't ready when the machine arrived on Saturday afternoon so it was too late to call and get the machine.

We put our Massey 285 on it for the first 2 loads, but it snubbed it out and we had to reduce the pressure.

We chop with an Oliver 1855 which put out 105 HP on the dyno about 5 years ago.
