Duramax Injectors Re-visited....

Down below someone mentioned $8000 to replace injectors in a Duramax. A friend has a CSX GMC supervisor's Duramax 2500 with 241000 miles he says he would sell me. Never had a hitch on it. Neat as a pin. He wants $11,500 for it. (2008) model. Runs well. Do injectors really cost that much???

Thanks!! He bought it at auction (he is a sometime dealer) for about $9500. and had a new gauge cluster and tires, shocks, dyno'd etc. done to it. It is a 4x4 extra cab.

They usually don't cost 8k but can real easily cost $4500-$5000 parts and labor. The labor to replace them is a real bear. My sons truck had two fail at 180k. GM had not extended the warranty at that time. It took us two full days to change all eight injectors. These injectors are under the valve cover. They fit into a cup that is in the water jacket.

You should run some type of fuel lubrication in them. The newer fuel seems to make the spring/seals fail more often. Make sure the additive you use does not have alcohol in it as it drys the seals faster.

My son uses Lucus products but I am not sure which one exactly.

I was quoted $3800 for the injectors on my 04 at the dealer...until I showed them the "special warranty" service bulletin. Only other issues with mine: Front hub bearings and instrument cluster.

I was the one that mentioned that number, and yes, it was a verified quote at the time (several years ago). At the time the dealer was the only place we could get injectors, I would imagine that has changed and brought the cost down, and labor rates are higher up here. Napa online shows reman injectors for an `05 at $668 a piece still, that is $5344 for eight, plus gaskets and labor at $110 an hour at our rate up here, yeah, I would say $6000 to $8000 is still a reasonable quote.

I do not have anything against the duramax engine, they have issues same as any other, and none of the newer light duty electronically injected diesels are cheap to get parts for.

Thats the new engine, injectors should be external to valve cover. They changed injector style in 04.5 01-04 have a 7 year from date of manufacture/200k mile warranty; they only replace the ones that are bad. Injectors are about $200 a piece plus gaskets and other things, then labor.

I just checked NAPA online again, injectors for an `02 come in at $503 each, so I still have to stand by my original figure. Maybe parts really are that much more expensive up here, but I don`t think so.

They don't cost that much. Not even from a dealer. Like has already been stated. The first couple of Dmax engines sometimes had injector issues. GM did extend the warranty. Some people never have a problem out of them. The newer engines its not as much of an issue with. My opinion as I'm into diesel performance also, do not buy injectors from a store like NAPA. Get on your computer and search for some performance shops taht sell engine parts such as injectors. 95% of the time you can get a set of new or reman injectors from a performance shop cheaper than someone like NAPA etc. In some cases you may get a little bit bigger injector (40-60 hp) and it help fuel milage. Just my opinion. Enjoy your truck!

Don't forget that it's wise to change the injector cups (sometimes they come out with the injector), o rings, and leak off line seals. Pricey job for sure.

Ky Hauler, as a employee of CSX, I would strongly advise you to walk away, unless the man that is selling the truck had the truck when it was in service for the railroad, and you trust him. Nothing against the d-max i put 240k on mine with no problems, I just know the life these trucks lead. Fleet maintenance means nothing if it never makes it to the shop, theres always 100 more spikes to pull, or another tenth to tamp, and we"ll get the truck serviced when were not busy. Your there and can look at it, I would just hate for a fellow ky boy to get burned.
