Help please.
My 1945 farmall h bull pinion seal is too large in diameter? When I removed the old seal there is a steel cup or basket still their, should I remove it too??? If I do I think my new seal will fit. Please Help
Thanks

You may have removed the inner part and not the outer,Give it a go.Progress evolved through people taking chances, then there is the workshop manual.

The metal cup/ring sort of thing was originally used to hold two thin seals together in one unit. I'm not sure why, that was just how it was done. You just need to yank that out of there, it is no longer good for anything. The new seal should fit in the hole in the casting once the ring is gone.

The original seals were leather is why. Synthetic rubber just wasn't yet ready for the task, (or any task for that matter) in the '30's when these things were designed, and natural rubber would not allow the shafts to turn without grabbing hold of them and tearing themselves to pieces if made tight enough to actually seal.
