What type of engine oil?

What type of engine oil is recommended for a detroit 6/71? I've been using a super 30 but it is no longer available locally. Not sure if this is the best choice, would something else work better?

I have been using a Low Ash 30 w Castrol and it works well.

Could be behind the times, but for many years only straight weight oil was recommended for Detroits. The viscosity extenders in multi-weight oils would eventually cause the compression rings to stick.

Hello ridgelane,
Mobil Delvac15/40 that would do the trick!
Delon and Rotella are not on my list.
Other brands would do fine. Just make sure is a diesel oil, and remember, you got to drive it like you stole it!V or inline 6?
They both screem at the end of the throttle travel don't they?
Guido.

Recommended by Detroit is a straight 30 weight but the majority of people I know still running them typically use a 15/40 Rotella.

Rotella-T 15/40 in my '61 MF 35... Engine runs smooth and quiet...

P.S. [b:bf85b63f21]PLUS[/b:bf85b63f21] a quart of Lucas Oil treatment... :D

Didn't know they put two stroke Detroit Diesels in
Massey 35's.
Run a high ash oil in a two stroke DD and you
will be cursing the engine when it was actually your
fault.
Multiweight oil isn't good for them either.

I ran Delo-40 for years in a 6-71. I would think 15-40 would be a good choice. I wouldn"t hesitate to use Rotella either.

Heck, its a Detroit, anything slippery, it`s all gonna end up on the ground anyhow ;) Straight 30 weight is what we run in `em, cheap and works well.
