Is there a trick to getting the starter out of a W-4? It won't fit out between the bellhousing and the drivecase for the belt pulley. Please don't tell me I have to remove the belt pully drive just to change the starter.

Wayne you do have to remove the belt pulley To get the starter out.I had to pull the starter from a Super W-4 last week.I removed the glass bowl from the gas tank with valve turned off, pulled the bolts from the belt pulley system, raised the belt pulley system up and slid over to the right. The starter still had to work it around to get it out. When starter is placed back lift the belt pulley system up and line up bolts to correct holes and place back into position and tighten bolts.I did use some gasket material by squirting some on a long screw driver spredding it over the old gasket.
Hope this helps you.

Take out as many of the cover bolts you can get to, use a pry bar and lift up the cover on the starter side. It will hit the belt pulley, but it will come out. Done it several times.
