White tractors

I have been looking around for a good cheap 150 hp tractor and whites are 1/4 the price of a JD. I have been told t oget a red srtipe. What is the difference between a red stripe and one that isnt?

Mechanically, not too much. The red stripes were series 2 and 3. The cab was definately better on the Series 3. They were the isolated cab, quietest in the industry at the time. If you're looking for 150 horses, definatly go with the 2-155 not the 2-150. The 2-150 was a Moline/Oliver G1355 with different sheet metal. They had the Moline 585 engine in them. The 155 used a 478 Hercules and was a totally newly designed tractor by White, not a carry over from the earlier days. I've got a 2-135 Series 3. Same tractor basically as the 155,but fewer horses and a 540/1000 PTO. The 155s would be 1000 only. Mine's closing in on 10,000 hours and I don't have any complaints with it.

One thing I'd add that came to mind I guess,is that the Series 2 red stripe was the same machine as the gray stripe. It just had to do with who owned the company at the time if memory serves me right. Texas Instruments took over the company and put the red stripes on them when they started production again. The Series 3 was different though with the isolated cab.

The red stripes are newer. I am really glad rrlund has 10000 hours on his 2-135. Most of the 2-135s and 2-155s around here have had the engine overhauled once or twice in that many hours. That Hercules motor is a "DUD". They seem to need overhauled ever 3000-4000 hours and real costly to overhaul. Just did a 2-135 this last Jan. The sleeve and piston set alone was $7500. No after market engine parts available, had to go to Agco. The total parts bill was over $10000. It just needed a normal overhaul. On any other make the parts would have been half that cost.

The 2-105 where good. The rest of the line had issues. The newer ones that have the Cummins are good too.

if youre getting a used one id say a 2-135 or 2-155. rrlund knows his whites pretty well so if you have questions hes the person to ask.

personally i like the cabs on the 2-105, 2-135 ive drove.

NO WAY IN THE WORLD it costs that much to overhaul one! Those kits are available from A@I for about $2800 complete. Sleeves, pistons, bearings, gaskets, the works. I overhauled mine 2 years ago,got the parts from Maibach, got the 4 ring high compression pistons and all, cost me just over $1800.
Sounds to me like you're just trying to push somebody toward a Deere.

Agreed with rrlund on rebuild cost, I was looking at buying a used 2-135 that needed an engine rebuild and it wouldn't have cost over $3000 for the parts.
