county tractors

Would you buy a former county mowing tractor? new holland ts100 with 2900 hours, they took all but the rear mounted mower off. How hard is running these mowers on tractors?

Three radical variables:
Which county, Who maintained it, and who drove it.
Some will be very good and an excellent buy, others will be clean looking junk.
The hours are pretty low, if it feels good and you can operate it for an hour or two to see if it has issues, it will be fine. If they wont let you have an opportunity to put in into use don't do it. Ask for service records as well. Finding that they changed the clutch 4 times tells you things!! Jim

Ask if they have a normal trade cycle for all equiment or just trade when it "wears out" or whatever. If it is on a normal trade cycle I'd proceed.
I agree with the other response, I would pass if they would not let you try it out for at least a half day. I even offer to furnish the fuel so the seller does not have not have an economic excuse not to let me try it out.

add a fourth variable:
modifications done to tractor for mowing purposes. some tractors get odd undersize wheels and have some common farm options (3 point, 540 pto, factory remote valves, etc.) eliminated to make it fit the mower company or municipality"s cost/safety/option specifications. Sometimes parts are cut off with a torch or welded to be unusable.
have some one familiar with the tractor series and/or an eye for detail with you to spot the weird features if you feel overwhelmed.
You can buy a working tractor ready to go for the same money as the odd one or for less money than the difference in parts to convert to common specification would cost.
on the positive side, Sometimes you get some nice options in the deal if they leave the extra controls for the mower in place: crankshaft driven hydraulic pump with large capacity, joystick hydraulic controls in addition to factory controls, etc. However the way the things are disassembled (like decommisioned cop cars) could wreck the nice parts in short order, so again familiarity with tractors and their systems becomes important.

best of luck

You really did not say what kind of mower/mowers it might of had installed on it. Two options that can save a clutch on a mower tractor is a reverser and a creeper gear. A tractor that has a boom mower installed on it will take the most abuse, in my opinion. I have operated both sickle bar mowers and boom mowers for our county. This was easy duty for the tractor/mower, reclaiming a mile of levee. The trees in the picture , I notched, then pushed over and de limbed them all with the mower.

Our county maintains equipment very well. If we get rid of a piece of equipment it is junk and not worth fixing.

Well, if they"re used like the ones around here are, they could pretty beat up. Mowing rough ragged ditchbanks can be a pretty mean job. All kinds of hazards hidden in the tall grass - rocks stumps, tree trunks, old tires - you get the picture. All that stress gets fed back to the tractor - even if the mower takes most of the beating. I"d look elsewhere.
