I'm wondering if there are some engineer types out there who could help me with a problem.
I built an automated washing house for running pigs through. The pigs go through kind of like in a car wash. Ther's a chain conveyor that they stand on and it pulls them through a series of sprays and brushes and gets them pretty clean and then blows them dry with warm air.
I have a building rented and the machine in place and have several contracts with local farmers for me to wash their hogs every couple of months. So far so good.
The trouble is about every 15 or 20th hog that goes through will get his foot caught in one of the chains. It doesn't hurt the hog really but it scares them and so they really start letting out a squeal. That in itself would be ok but the building I rented is right behind a dentist's office.
I guess his business is dropping off badly because when people hear the terrible squealing they think it's coming from his office.
They're afraid he's a really bad dentist so no one is going to him for dental work anymore.
At this point he's threatening to sue me if I can't get the noise level down.
Anyway, if someone here can help me keep the pigs' feet from getting caught and making all that racket I would sure apreciate it.

With tongue firmly planted in cheek....

You always have two choices when dealing with acoustics, either reduce the source or provide some attenuation between the source and receiver.

Consider a wall between the two sites (a Hog Wall)

This story reminds me of a store front down the road from my Dad's place one was a Small Pet Store right next to a Chinese Restaurant. Why redign the coveyor just run your wash at night, hogs don't care when they get clean.

The problem here is that you're dealing with live hogs. There's a simple solution right in front of you.

OMG, that is too funny.
So, after I got done laughing and got back up off the floor, I thought I would offer a suggestion.
Go to a local sign shop and have a few professional signs made for the dentists office, no charge to the dentist of course. How about something like this:

Dear Patients: Do not be alarmed by the loud squeals you hear now and then. These are not our patients, instead the noise is coming from the hogs next door.

Hehe. Maybe it's time to consider selling the hog wash business and finding a different job. I heard Accelerated Genetics is looking for people with a lot of experience spreading the kind of manure that they have over there.

How about going into "Public Relations" Nah......How 'bout mak'n hog muzzles

Since you are a small business owner and a job creator it is my belief that you should never have to pay taxes again, since they stifle innovation and hiring.

I say you franchise, move one franchise per state. Put it in the state capitals. Oh and of course a wholesale outlet, in DC. All those places are used to the sounds of hogs at the trough, screaming for more. Look at all of em that showed up in Wisconsin, this summer! Now there was a lot of hogwash there!

Count to 19,stop, take a smoke, count to 19,hell no,hang a dentist office sign over your barn,That way all the whimps will be glad they're not next door!!

Now this I can help you with..

Friend of mine had a similar problem but his Hogwash was near a funeral home that did cremations.

He found if you take a cleaning rod for a 12 gauge
and wrap a length of gauze on it to form a large Q-TIP ™ then add some paste style anti squealing agent. swab the hogs throat with it before setting him on the conveyor.... Works on wheels ????

Some of the Hogs have trouble getting past the "Gag reflex" symptoms, but he also is trying a newer method on the shorter legged miniature pot bellies... they are so easily trained .... He sets them on a skate board and they seem to like this system much better..... Heck some of them will even come back for a second go ....

All in fun guys.
Meant for a chuckle, or at least a smile.
Woke up with that in my head this morning.
Dunno -
Maybe that Mexican food last night...
Thanks for all the replys

Put them in a sling and get their feet off the floor. Better yet a ski lift. They'll enjoy it so much you won't have to coax them through.

Awww common now..I was wantin to find who could tell the biggest, believable ? story -----LOL

With out a picture,, you can't be helped,
but maybe cover the chain, but with out looking at it, no one can advise,
except
I would sue you too if you did hog business next to a dentist,
where's your common sense ?

Rusty, If'n you put 'em in a sling, their bellies won't get clean

Since you know the trouble is about every 15 or 20th hog that goes through will get his foot caught in one of the chains, only send 14 hogs through the hog wash at a time.

Or you can "cull" out hog #15 and hog #20 that only get their feet caught to solve the problem.

OR........you could send in 1 and wait a few seconds and send in 14. That way you could get all 15 washed without a snag and the conveyor belt would never know.
