Who do you guys recomend for an auction of a large collection of tractors, equipment, tools, and cars (some rare)? Not planning one, just doing some estate planning and gathering information for the next generation. Is Aumann still around? Haven't seen any of his lately. Thanks for info.

Van Der Brink is a good auction company. They do a lot of the estate auctions that have Classic Cars and Antique tractors and the such. I was at one of there auctions this last weekend, and they had people from Australia and Europe, so they have a pretty good fallowing across the world. They also do advertising in some car magazines, like Old Cars Weekly. Look at there website and see the results of there past auctions. They do some pretty rare collections.

Hope this helps!

Go to auction zip.com they are all listed there.

Aumann is still out there, seems I get an auction notice from him every other week or so. He is still pretty much top dog when it comes to vintage equipment.

Vander Brinks did an auction here in SD a few weeks ago. Hundreds of cars and a ton of tractors. Maybe a thousand people there.
But they didn't have and bleachers or viewing areas. They had the cars lined up in rows and only about 30 people could see a car as it was being auctioned off. They didn't start a one of them. Most were missing the air cleaners, had they removed them to pour gas in the carbs?
Anything that was valued at less than 2500 dollars they didn't work at all.

I would say most auctions are run like that now that I've watched. Unless the owner/represenitive is there to start stuff up, especially anything with a crank, it doesn't get started. I've always wondered just how bad that hurts a sale not having stuff run that is claimed to be running. The exceptions seem to be some of the large consignments like Mecum and Polk where they do run a lot of stuff through a central ring. Another issue is a lot of auctioneers just pile stuff together without a clue as to where it really goes, unless you have the owner standing there saying this goes with that your going to have a lot of stuff that should go together, not.

A local guy might be willing to spend more time organizing the sale then one of the national guys, but also might know a whole lot less about some of the items. Other problem with a local guy is them being able to handle a major sale with internet bidding and getting the word out. A lot of auctioneers seem to have a real problem getting the word out effectivly.

Unless you have a real fancy collection you'd be better off going with a good local auctioneer.Last couple "Big Name" auctions I went to local auctioneers charging alot less would have gotten as much or more $$$ in my opinion.Good advertising in the right places is the key to a successful auction.
