12v CONVERSION

Switching my '55 wd-45 from 6 to 12 volt with key solenoid start. I will be using a VOLTMETER in place of the existing ammeter. Also installing headlights, tail lamp, and a work light. I am using a 12 volt alternator with internal regulator, 12 volt coil with internal resistor, and existing distributor and 6 volt starter. I have seen Duey Schutter's diagram, but it doesn't show how to incorporate the voltmeter.
A diagram would be very helpful.
Thank you
Ray

It is simple to change from an ammeter to a voltmeter. You would hook the + and - from the ammeter together, and hook that to the + on the voltmeter. The - on the voltmeter goes to ground.

You may need a Diode in the wire from the Alternator..
I do not have one on mine and if I do not have the engine at Low idle, it does not like to shut-down..I guess, back-feeding from the Alternator..??
Works Great, but will show a discharge at low Idle..Excites well at low RPM and tapers the voltage off real well..
This was a 3-wire Alt with an Internal reg.
Just jumpered the #1 and #2 wire (plug location) and it works fine..

The Full sized Alt didn't fit and I used the smaller one..

That's correct to hook + and _ on ammeter together, but connecting + of voltmeter at this point would have it on all the time. Connect the + on the voltmeter to output of ignition switch (same wire that goes to coil) then voltmeter will only indicate when switch is on.

Source or input for Light and ignition switches is the big output wire from alternator. This would have been at the generator side of the ammeter
