The tractor thats rare black magic. Seriously, mentioning the mere word IH 454 can send people running. When you do corner someone he don't know a 1/10 of what he thought. Are these things to be that highly feared?

There were a whole line of 4X4 tractors made by IH. 424, 434,444,454. I don't think they were very different, just bigger engines or rated for higher RPM's in the later models.
I've had a 2424 (industrial 424) for over 20 years and its been a great tractor.

My Neighbour used to run a Massey 135 and an IH 454 together. he said for pulling in the field, the IH was better ( In all fairness the IH is a bit bigger and has a bit more hp , so it is to be expected) but as for reliability The Massey won hands down.
As for myself I often had to resort to ye olde MF 168 whilst the IH 674 was back at the dealers yet again!

Well that scared me significantly. Does anyone have a pic or drawing of what the shift linkage should look like, so as when I put it together it stays together

My grand dad had two of 'em. On with a loader, one without. My dads still got them both (one needs rebuilding, the other runs 5 foot field mower and 8' finish mower just fine). Ran both of them many a summer baling hay and spreading chicken litter. Only regular problem was getting them to prime (they're both diesels) if you forgot and let them run out of fuel. Did shift on the fly once and something jammed in transmission :( ... tractor spent a month in the shop... and I spent more than a month in the doghouse...

Dad also has a IH484 (later generation 454) and no problems.
