John Deere model 35 chopper

We have a John Deere model 35 silage chopper, just got it at the begining of the summer, and it didnt come with a book. Mother Deere says those books are not availiable anymore, but thought that parts would be......does anyone have a book they would part with, or be willing to make a copy of? Will be glad to pay your asking price. This thing is out of adjustment, and we dont know where to start.....ANY HELP APPRECIATED!!!!! Thanks in advance, Mike.

There are approx. 9 operator manuals for sale at present on Ebay. Do a search for John Derre 35 Chopper. You mention adjustments? Do you mean the knife to shear bar adjustment? How I set the knife to shear bar on my Fox two row corn chopper. I had a traveling sharpening stone that traveled back and forth along the knife edge until all knives were sharpened as needed. Then Set each knife so a clearance of a buisness card will clear between each knifes sharp edge and the shear bar. There were no other adjustments needed for the machine to perform as expected. My Fox chopper got used more than any other harvest machine includeing the combine I think. Thru out the hay, straw and haylage, corn silage seasons the knives got checked daily and sharpened and reset many times. I replaced the knives once a year.

I looked on ebay before i posted this.......all i seen was manuals for different models? I guess maybe they are all the same? or close enough.....With what you just stated, I can probobaly make it go ok.....thanks.

If its just the shear bar you are adjusting, if I remember right, it has four hard surfaced edges. Pull the two main bolts and pull it out the side and see if there are any new edges left on it. Dads 38 had a stone you pulled back and forth over the knives to sharpen them. It was a lot of years back, but it seems to me you removed two 3/8 bolts on the knife drive line so they were free and then put a small chain on two sprockets so the knives spun in reverse. As the blades were spinning backwards you would move the stone back and forth over the knives, giving it a little more tension until the knives were sharp. After sharpening, adjust up the shear bar, so it just has some clearance and no ticking. It almost seems to me that when they were in a hurry they would just run the stone over the knives with it running normal, but it was a long time ago, not sure if you would want to chance doing that. They were an easy pulling chopper, only trouble we had with it was filling the rear of a high dump silage wagon.

It's a little while since I looked at a 35 real close... but off the top of my head I recall that the main difference between it and a 3940 was basically just in the feed rolls... and the fact that the 35 has full width knives. Beyond that the basic operating principles and adjustments would for all intents and purposes be nearly identical.
So... get a 3940 book if you can't find anything else. It'll get you close.
When you really get to looking at the two side by side you find that probably 75% of the machine is the same as the newer model...
