bought some T&G douglas fir year before last from a BB store. Wrapped in plastic from the store. Built a gate from it a couple weeks ago. Guy that was the brains of the operation said wait a year before any coating...... Wife is getting impatient. Think it can be stained now, or needs to wait? Afraid it'll be weathered too much if we wait a year. Weathers out a nice grey but takes several years and the place our gate is gets no sun from sep-may so that = mold.

Think it can have a couple coats of good stain now?

If every square millimeter of the boards are covered with a paint or sealer they will stay dry and fine. If moisture gets into the board and cannot get out due to sealed surface, it will dryrot sooner than if it was unpainted, and could dry naturally. Paint or sealer is not a stain, which only colors the wood. Sealer stain, or varnish stain are different and carry a body of polymer beyond the color. (I like weathered wood, and it will last. Jim

We have about a 5 year old western cedar home. Had used a product called Thompson,t water seal and was told it was the best on the market. Wasn,t getting a good year before things were getting light again. Swithed to a sealer called CFW and it has been twice as good as the Thompson,s. I think at my age I may end up like Jan says and just let nature take it,s course. Side note, My daughter fought all time when we were planing this retirement home for a product called HARDIE PLANK, less mantaince.

If the douglas fir was dry when you built the gate, it could have been stained the day you put it up. If it has been rained on I would wait a week or so for it to dry. I often refinish a fence where I power wash the fence to get the mold off. I usually wash the fence one week and stain it the next. The only reason for waiting is the water content in the wood will prevent the stain from penetrating evenly. You would get less protection from the wet boards and perhaps uneven color.
