O.T. Jeep starting issue

Quick question about a 1983 Jeep CJ7. I have a starting issue. It has the 258/ 4spd. My Jeep gets no spark while cranking, but, as soon as I release the key, it gets spark & the Jeep (usually) starts. Is this the ignition module? I have put a new soleniod in it & a new coil & that hasn"t solved the issue. thank you

Think so too. Try one of them remote starter buttons to prove it. For a 30 yr old vehicle just put a pushbutton in place to start it.

If I remember right , they had a goofy pick up coil in distributor. Check to see you have voltage at coil + terminal when cranking , if you do ,I'd look at the pick up coil .

Been a long time but I'm thinking that they used a GM dizzy. Some of the GM systems of long ago use a 2 feed system to provide juice to the coil. While cranking the coil got 12 volts to aid in starting and after the key was released from the start position it switched over to (I wanna say 8 ) lower voltage through a ballist resistor. I'm pretty sure that it was off of the ignition switch but don't really remember. Someone posted a link to a Jeep forum the other day, you may want to go over there and ask.

could be the ignition module or pick-up coil in the distributor. Jeep use a dura spark ignition system that is the same as what a ford ignition system uses and its not a very good system. I replaced mine with a single wire HEI setup on my jeep and on the bronco I have now. Money well spent if you ask me.

Sneaky way to get that problem tested/taken care of: run a wire with a one way diode from starter solenoid to coil, when starter is used the full voltage circuit goes through test wire and will quick start. This indicates that starting circuit was open- either switch, relay or bypass wire/resister open. Some people just wire this 'test' wire in direct and forget about replacing switch's, etc. Diodes are about a $1.00, switch's can be a $99.00 item. Diode is needed to prevent feedback from coil to starter after engine starts. Jeep ignition with the motorcraft box- ran into trouble with them when worked for Jeep dealer, was a repair kit for plugin that had new plugins and silicone grease pack. RN

Will not be the pickup coil if it's starting. He's saying it will not fire while cranking but when he turns the key from start to run with the engine still turning it will fire. When a pick coil goes bad it will not fire at all.

Ya your rite. Got to thinkin about that while I was sittin in the combine this afternoon. I would lean for the ignition control module.

RN and old tanker are right. There is a start circuit and there is a run circuit if I remember correctly. See if solenoid has at least 2 small terminals. Dave
