Oil furnace chimney question?

I'm in the process of trying to move the furnace in the basement of the house I'm living in and after disconnecting the pipe to the chimney I see there is about a 1" thick layer of soot, ash, and goodness only knows what else lying in the bottom of the exhaust that runs through the top of the furnace. Should I just suck this stuff out with a shop vac and worry no more about it or is this a problem? I usually stick with woodstoves so oil burners are new ground for me. Many thanks, Sam

Be sure to have HEPA filter on the vac or you WILL regret it. Dust in your house from the vacuum like you will not believe. Vacuum and forget it, the flue will be OK.

It's normal. A good annual service includes cleaning it out. I don't burn much oil so I get mine serviced every other year, and I clean it myself on the off years. It is normal to get about 1/16 to 1/8 per year. I just vacuum it with the shop vac and I did not notice any dust in the air.

Many thanks for the help. I don't know if the shop vac has a HEPA filter or not, will have to check. Not that it isn't already very dusty. I've been demolishing an old concrete cistern and that's made its fair share of mess. Many thanks, Sam

Bus Driver is right on. Oil furnace soot is oily for lack of a better word. Wipe oil soot off of your good furniture and you end up with black oily streaks. Neither you or the little lady will be in a good mood for awhile. Jim

I'm already in the doghouse after using the cement saw and jackhammer on the old cistern but I guess there's no point in digging myself an even deeper hole. That said if I don't get this thing hooked back up and working before it really starts to get cold then I'm going to be in trouble for sure. Thanks, Sam

Put a hose on the exhaust of the shop vac and run it outside (window or?) to be clean. Do not open it inside either. Substantial soot might indicate the need to adjust the combustion air intake volume to assure the cleanest flame possible. By the book, not your best guess. CO is not your friend. Jim
