Saw this in a tree yesterday

I have never in nearly 60 years seen honeycomb built out in the open like this on a tree limb. Seen plenty of swarms but not with comb. I will try to post my first pic. [/img]

we have what is called a mexican honey bee, that builds combs in trees and on the ground under trees. Nasty little fellers and increasing in numbers a bunch. State says they aren"t this far north but thet are here. Extension agent wouldn"t come look cause he"s afraid of them, but took one to him and said that is what they are.

have seen it on occasion around here in central ohio,..i think it's from late swarm that maybe lost it's queen or an infertile queen

Try again

I to think I can only say I have seen that done once or twice and that is a bout it. Depending on where you are it could be that they bees could not find a hollow tree etc to set up shop in so they just set up in the open

This was behind my shop about 45 feet up in a black locust tree. Guess I will have to start calling it a honey locust.

I've seen that also. A hive had swarmed and was
in a tree for 2 days looking for a permanent
home. Workers were still bringing in necter and
they had to put it someplace. They later moved
on but came back for the honey and left the comb.
