O/T my first year farming

Its been almost one year since I decided to play around with some farming. It has been an interesting road. I really did not no a dang thing about it but you learn fast when you jump in with both feet.
I probably picked the worse year to do it. The weather was not the best up here for me. It started with a very wet spring, I could not get on the field until mid june, and when I did get on the field I was getting stuck in a few places.
The tractor I had is a massey 1105. the motor was burning oil like crazy when I was doing the plowing last fall so I rebuilt the motor last winter and fixed a few other things. I thought everthing was ready to go this spring so I disced about 20 acres then the back end went out of it. I finished doing the discing and the seeding done with some old clunkers.
So anyways Im just finishing up my harvest, I had planted oats and was able to make some green feed out of them. Im not sure if I will be able to sell them because there is alot of hay in my area this year, but we will see how that goes.
I have learned lots of new stuff and I think I will be more prepared for next season. I will try it again and see what happens.
Its been lots of fun. Thanx for reading....Lyle

Sounds like our first year here. I was never able to come out on the other side between the equipment costs and the extreme swings in the weather. I'm a "dry land farmer" now since it never rains in this previously swampy country. Wish I had some of that hay you have too much of up there........

My first year of farming was 1974, my junior year
in high school. Dad told me about some ground I
could rent here next door in the Coralville Reservoir flood plain.

It had not been farm for a few years and would
have to be plowed. So I hook the plow up to the
966 and go to plow it one Saturday early in the
spring.

It was plenty wet and I got stuck a few times
before I got the 30 acres plowed. Then it started
raining and the reservoir just kept rising and
covered my land. Water stayed over it till about
the 1st of July.

By the time it dried out it was to late to plant.
So my first year there was not any harvest.

so I guess Im doing OK if I got a few bales. Just want to say, hats off to all you full time farmers. I have more respect for you guys now then I ever did! :D Things are always easier said then done

This "farming thing" kinda gets in your blood-addicting.Yep,next year will be better-sometimes not....But we just keep on keepin on....Better luck next time,Steve

Now ya see young feller, yer first mistake was not having a 100% Massey Ferguson stable. And not fixing the 1105.

So that is your second mistake. Not handcuffing Uncle Hector to every machine, one at a time, until they were all rebuilt to perfection.

Third mistake was late season oats. You had to seed them the day the snow melted...oh.. yeah... the snow never melts up there...

OK, last mistake.. not diversifying your crops see. Now, say, a hardy moose breed? Dairy moose? maybe a dairy beef moose breed? Rotate crop with say- ice cubes. Or mixed crops! Have the dairybeef mooses wallow in the ice cubes... you would have had a better year... yepyep
