The left brake does not fully release when releasing pedal. If you tap
pedal while backing, it releases.Dealer said to pull drum off but
there's not room to pull it off because bell housing is in the way. It
looks like you could pull the shaft out of tranny but I'm scared to do
that. Does anyone know about these?

You can pull the shaft right out of the transmission. It will not hurt a thing. You will need to do it. That is how you work on the left brake assembly. The problem is more than likely the return spring has broken on the brake shoes. Simple fix. The brakes on that series of combine are Bendix made. The 7700 and 7720 where the same as 1980 3/4 Dodge pickup. I used to keep a spring set on hand. The whole set from a parts house was cheaper than one or two springs from JD.

A couple more Questions: On the left final drive where the drive shaft goes into it,the seal is leaking. Looks like a fresh leak that just started. Is there a seal there that can be re[laced from the outside now while I have the drive shaft off? Also, the brake slave cylinder on the right side is leaking brake fluid badly. Can this be fixed without removing the entire brake assembly?

JD, the brakes on a 4400/4420 combine are entirely different than a larger combine. They use disk brakes rather than shoes. They weren't the best when they were brand new. Odds are there is rust around the actuators which is causing them to stick. A very common problem caused by dirt collecting in this area. Soaking with a penetrant of choice will free them up most of the time and if that doesn't work heat is the next avenue. Mike
